Dying Cabomba
Newbie here: I have some cabobmba which I believe is purple c. (it was a dark army green with purplish leaves near the top). At first it grew nicely but now the bottom leaves are turning yellow-brown and falling off. Some of the top leaves are still pearling with the bottom leaves falling off. :icon_frow
The cabomba is in the back but not too close together. what gives? i have a 29 g. 2x65w CF 6700's . DIY CO2 - 1 bubble every 1.5 seconds...Using flourish at triple dose with salt subst. for K until GW ferts arrive. |
cardinal - It sounds like you may have Cabomba furcata, one of the most light hungry aquarium plants around. You've got plenty of light, which would be the reason the tops are staying purple but my guess is, that the bottoms are not receiving enough light, for whatever reason. To test this you can float one of the stems to see if the bottom leaves recover. I've got some of the same plant and, as long as I get enough light to bottoms of the stems, they keep their leaves, although the color is much brighter toward the tops.

so if its a lack of light, should i spread them out more?
|
Give it a shot. If it is lack of light you'll notice a difference quickly.

thanks travis, i'll try it , but i may switch to a background plant which can stand to be more densely planted.

What are your water temperatures, many types of Cabomba prefer cooler water.
If the plant was sold to you as "Purple Cabomba", my guess is it is Cabomba pulcherrima. My past experience with Cabomba furcata is that it an unmistakable red color. Mike |
my cabomba is growing good at 86f but just resently i have had a major snail
out brake and am treating it with *had a snail* and hoping that it will work becuse my plants are being eatin:@ |
momo-80 f. too warm?
|
80° F is a bit warm. What type of fish are you keeping?
Temperature can play a role in struggling Cabomba. Mike |
