I wonder if cost effective way to increase features would be to include an android based mini pc inside the fixture, or as an outside module (I don't know if they have a built in speaker). These sell retail for 35-100+ with wifi, and I assume the costs to a manufacturer including the tech in their product would be cheaper.

So if this tech was part of the fixture they could plug it into a tv/monitor and access an app specially made for finnex lights, basically making something equivalent to the bluefish controller, but with increased capability to add/use more apps, and if the mini pc doesn't have a speaker you could build one into the light fixture, or go with the bluefish trick of having the app communicate with a 3rd party Bluetooth speaker, or maybe pair with a phone and have the sound play there. The phone might double as a display possibly, or maybe just plug it into the pc to interface with it. When there are more Phone/tablet to control another phone/tablet without needing to be rooted, that will open up a lot of possibilities.

I don't know... I'm just spit ballin here, but seems like it might be possible to get the same if not more functionality in these fixtures with FX if they used android tech, rather then the manufactures starting from scratch. We're starting to see apps/phones used in conjunction with controllers, but maybe the way to go is just to build the controller with android tech into the fixture itself and have that interface with a pc or phone

Basically here is what I want...

Access my fixture(s) through my phone and/or PC, set up 24 hour automated light schedule that includes pre set times sunrise/sunset/moonlight, and for storm events/cloud cover, and the option for random storm events/cloud cover (the ability to mimic real weather in a location is nice like some controllers do , but I could live without it if I got this other stuff) ...

The ability to load my own sound files into the device to sync with storm events or even sunrise/sunset and moonlight modes. I could have it play a song in the morning, nature sounds, something trippy or spooky at night (a wolf's howl?), etc..etc.. So in effect build one of those sound therapy/sound fx machines into the light and the ability to sync those various sound files with various lighting events throughout the day.

Seems like all this would be fairly easily achievable with an android mini pc built into the fixture, an app, and someone way to interface with it all.

Then perhaps the next step is to take the weather simulation fx a bit further, and/or add more aesthetic Fx by utilizing individually addressable leds or programmable arrays of leds... Something like this...
http://www.adafruit.com/products/1689

(Think true dynamic cloud cover Fx, and multi positional lightning strikes)

...Then we add Quasi holographic lightning, fairies and fireflies, maybe a northern lights effect, and well hell why not a Dragon too!

Thanks! ...Ya, as stuff gets cheaper we'll get there I'm sure. It always seems I have expensive tastes and am wanting things that are a few years away I think the new bluefish controller has a sound feature in it's storm mode. I assume the sound comes from your phone through a bluetooth speaker you have to add yourself though. My guess is the first sound features for lights will take this path, and then someone will finally just put the sound playback right into a fixture housing when it doesn't add to much to development/production costs.

oh and that stuff will totally work in an aquarium (the cave would require some extra waterproofing for some elements which along with the video tech may make it to expensive to put into production. I don't know, is there a high end aquarium ornament market out there? ... but the lightning fx is ready since it works a bit differently. I'll have to set up a small lightning
aquarium to post to the forum for you guys. The dartfrog/vivarium hobby stole me away from the freshwater aquarium hobby just as I was getting into planted tanks

P.S. Looking forward to this new finnex light, sounds very promising for my purposes. Maybe I'll be able to send some vivarium hobby business your way and/or do a vivarium and video review once I get my hands on one.

All these lights are coming out with fx, but no sound ...I think a plug and play system with sound seems like the next logical step for the makers of such things

P.S. I also made qausi holographic fairy video cave Decoration, if you'd like to see it, but it is a little further off topic then the lightning, so I didn't wanna muck up your thread any more

Or maybe I'm reading too much into that pic, but that's what it looks like to me.

Well it isn't anything they wouldn't encounter in nature. My guess is most would become accustomed to it, especially if it was at timed intervals like..."oh gee here comes todays scheduled storm, better go hide under my rock" I think novelty lights/sound though should be used for brief durations just to be safe.

I've created this proof of concept storm system for a vivarium. Much if not all of it would work in an aquarium. This system 1 ups the flashing lights for lightning and uses a optical trick to make it look like actual lightning tendrils streak down into the air/water. Plants/Animals would be visible behind in that area, but the "shocks" wouldn't make true contact... so no cooked fish. I guess you'd call it qausi holographic lightning... It is difficult to see but there is a floating cloud too that I've kept from sinking.

Sorry for the Night time view, but I'm kinda keeping the guts/specifics of how I did this under wraps for now...

So ya, the light everyone is waiting for is still being put through tests:

Any chance we'll get storm audio to go along with any storm lighting FX. The bluefish controller look like it will have this feature. Seems the next logical path for these weather FX lights.

pwolfe Glad to see the planted community finally get some good feature sets in led lighting. I bought a maxspect because at the time no one in the planted world offered what I wanted. This would have swayed my decision.

gt turbo I just saw this thread and I think Finnex is doing great things. I'm quite happy with what I see proposed as new product offerings. I would wish for some backward compatibility but alas it's not to be, meh!!

As for all you guys who have new fixtures that you want to trade in, I might be willing to buy some of these used systems at a very reasonable prices. lolol

I don't want to get too far ahead and release too much information on this project but we have about 3 different fixtures we plan on releasing. As we could not incorporate the dimmer/timer option on the old fixtures without having users open up the fixture and splice wires, we decided to incorporate this fixture with an ADD ON to the new fixtures which would allow easy plug-n-play, all while keeping the unit itself at the lowest price possible. All 3 fixtures should fill a certain nitche. And when I mention higher powered fixture, rest assured you don't need to think higher price tag. We're doing our best to get a power house fixture as close to RAY2 pricing as possible . Stay tuned~

I cant realize I haven't seen this thread yet!

What about for those of us who dont mind opening up the old fixture to splice in some wires? I'd be willing to do the work/take the risk if you can make the dimmer/timer option available for us to add on to the older units. Its great that you're expanding your product line and all; but its sort of a downer to hear that my brand new light fixture is essentially obsolete already!
