tandaina Well things are trucking alone quite nicely, everything seems good and healthy so we've got shrimp. Bought some blue pearls from a forum member. They are definitely busy, busy, busy and swimming like crazy. Already grazing off the catalpa leaves and the carpeting plants. I've got the intake on the Zoo med packed with foam (to protect babies from a trip to the filter) for now and when my prefilter sponges come I'll replace the regular intake with a big sponge to grow more biofilm for grazing.

I may decide to drill some more holes in the spray bar as the flow is pretty strong. But right now a few of the bigger shrimp seem to be purposefully taking joy rides in the current so...

dru Looks good

I had mine looking good then I tried to uproot a crypt and it destroyed my scape

It has been a battle since then

tandaina Sure!

So this tank is preparing to host shrimp. I wanted lots of low carpeting stuff that'd provide good biomass grazing. I too have had odd issues with this little tank. It isn't just the size, I've kept smaller tanks. I've kept planted jars. Something about the size and shape of this thing makes it challenging. Mostly I think the biggest issue is balancing the amount of light to ferts/plants/etc.

Here's the tank with the Zoomed filter hooked up. And a top down view for the heck of it.

dru Any planted pics?

I have gone through some trials with my mr aqua 3

tandaina It's alive!

Have added a bunch of plants to this that a fellow planted tank lover in the area gave me, and it now sports of fancy ZooMed 501 Filter.

tandaina Aquatop, sadly it isn't new it has been sitting around unused for a while. Sounds like i'll be running out to the fish store.

Oh that sucks, if its still 'new' return it and ask for a replacement, it should not be loud from the motor, just vibration if properly made (but with so much junk made in China now that's never a guarantee anymore :c). I have the tetra whisper brand, what brand is yours?

AquaAurora I wrap all my air pumps in a towel (old cloths or small rags/blankets work too) and just stuff them somewhere below tank/out of sight if possible. Putting a piece of dense foam under the feet of it also works as long as its sides aren't touching anything else (if so wrap it in foam). Its still quieter than some canister filters, which you can't muffle since its their motor humming instead of vibrations.
Nice plants and rocks btw, petrified wood or is that a quarts rock (have something simular that's rose quarts)?. Other filter options might be the azoo mini HOB, but I prefer sponge filters for shrimp tanks personally.

tandaina OK so just to bring this up to date. We now live 1,700 miles from where this tank started. It is the only tank I have left. The plan is cherry shrimp. Some very generous local fish keepers shared plants with me so I've got a good start on the planting. Trying to figure out filtration for this tiny little guy.

Currently have a sponge filter in there but the bubbler motor runnign it is so loud I can't hear myself think. :\

tandaina The new betta has figured out that I mean food and has taken to demanding it. By flaring and dancing and getting down right spoiled.

To solve the "no lid" issue I ordered a couple BAGS of dwarf water lettuce and frogbit from a forum member. Mr Betta now has a floating mass of plants. He seems happy with this arrangement as he's built the biggest bubble nest i've ever seen in one corner of the tank. He couldn't jump out of that mess if he tried, and it'll help with keeping the water clean as well and cutting down light to the bottom which was getting some algae. pictures soon as I can.

tandaina Wow, that is tiny, thanks!

This sponge filter is tiny and a great size for small tanks.

Sorry to hear about your betta, we have several that like current as well and they are great fun. This sponge filter doesn't seem to bother the ones that don't like current.
