kcoscia The stocking is set at 1 male betta, 1 amano shrimp, 1 nerite snail and a few pond snails

Oto Guy An African dwarf frog would be fine although they are recommended in pairs or groups. Otos are not that great as just one. A good alternative for an oto would be a nerite snail if you are wanting an oto for algae. Shrimp would also be great for that tank.

kcoscia Thanks guys!
He has grown and changed SO much since I got him. I brought him home on 9/1 so it's been about 3 months. No breeding for him. I don't think I have the skills for that yet and I don't know if I will want to if I could hahaha
I'm pleased with the minimalist look, and I'm waiting for the anacharis to get its height back to cover the heater.

DizzyD That is a gorgeous betta. I'm getting ready to set up a 5 gallon pretty similar to this, but for red cherry shrimp. Hope it does as well as yours.

Nathaniel Beautiful fish - he's one of the nicest I've seen in a while
Loved the jungle tank, but can see how the minimalism can work too!

AquaAurora Your betta colored up quite nicely since its "come home" photo, will you try to breed him?

Coastlife247 What have you done!!!? The tank looked amazing clustered up. If anything I would have just taken a knife and cut the tops of the plant a few inches below the waterline leaving one or two here and there. Bettas are from rice ponds and look great the closer you can imitate their environment.
This being said, still looks great and the Betta is Beautiful!

kcoscia thanks!
update: I didn't like the clustered look and the betta wanted more space to swim

Regenesis I'm really digging the 5.5! This is what I plan on doing with mine.

kcoscia updates: added betta log (christmas gift hit) took out the dying water sprite and put in Myriophyllum mattigrossense. planning to clear out the left side and move the anacharis to that place, but will tackle that next week.

kcoscia The frogbit TOOK OVER. The betta was clearly disliking the fact that he couldn't get to the surface at all. I took about 3/4 out and did some root/anacharis trimming.
It's amazing how excited he is. He's opening his fins so much wider. He is happy.

Also, I could see how my plants were suffering because of the lack of light. I'm hoping things will perk up a bit now that it's shining through.

kcoscia Well when the cold MA weather started drifting in, I noticed it was dropping to 72-74 on the far side of the aquarium. Not acceptable for my little guy. I didn't want him to take an immune system hit so I purchased a petco adjustable, I think 50 watt. Now it stays at 78-80. I may even kick it up a bit
