At the time that I made this observation, I was shopping for fish/plants/pumps to stock a tank. The Pruess prices were only *slightly* higher than all of the above - local shops, BIGBOX stores, online stores. I always just figured it was because of the great staff they hire, excellent selection of EVERYTHING, customer service (the topic of this thread), the fact they ACTUALLY QUARANTINE, etc, etc. The fact that I may have to pay *slightly* more to get the same product means one thing: it's not the same product at all. It's far better.

I'm sorry if I am being nosey, I have never been to the store, I am on the other side of the country, but I hear this all the time about local stores and how they are gouging people on purpose and it is really ridiculous for the most part. If I want to sell an aqualight fixture, I have to buy it from one of their distributors, just like local stores do... a distributor like Central Pet or African Northwest which is a west coast distributor. Do you know how much I pay for the fixture? About 10 percent MORE than what it sells for on the internet by Drs Foster and Smith, Pet Solutions, and Big Als. So lets say I mark it up 10 percent which after the cost of shipping leaves me with practically nothing, I am still selling 20% higher than Big Als and the rest of them. The average local pet shop wouldn't have any more buying power than I do. They are not going to buy a truck load of light fixtures. This is not theory its just plain fact.
People complain in forums like this about how local stores do not carry things like C02 systems, lighting, even substrates, and this is why. They can't match internet prices, so many stores don't even bother. Preuss seems to be trying to compete when they can
Preuss says they made a mistake and seems to be going out of their way to make it right, and yet someone still makes a crack about the "spies". Good grief.

my exp at Preuss's
after their opening in the new store i decided to take a cruise up to the store.
i bought a 65 watt coralife colormax CF bulb.
about 5 months later my bulb burned out. i called them and explained that i didn't have a receipt or any real proof i bought it there < but i did >
so they told me to cruise up and they would work something out...
i figured ... 50% off a new bulb or something.
they gave me a new bulb for free.
i took it home and it didn't work.
called them and they were willing to bend over backwards to make everything right for me. including shipping me a new bulb for free.
preuss is about an hour away from me.
me and the wife were looking forward to go back to preuss's to yet again get a new light for free.
lets see you get that service from an online vendor. i look forward to driving an hour to visit them again.
i like being able to hold the harware im buying at least once... so if we all continue to buy everything online that option will disappear. that doesn't mean you should have to pay out the nose for stuff. just talk to them they are great people and have a ton of knowledge. something you can't get at most online wholesalers.
just my two cents worth... ok well about a quarter

Like esarkipato said I did recieve a personal PM after some of there spys reported this post to the store. Thats fine I am glad it got back to them so they could address the problems and look into the price gouging. I was asked to call and talk to the manager on duty and he explained to me what happend and offered me a discount on my next purchase. I Live an hour away don't know when or if that is going to happen but sure wish I could have gotten those lights for a better price at the time.
i did get the T-5 lights from Big Als online 2 day shipping they where two 48inch fixtures plus added a 10,000 k bulb for the price of there one freshwater fixture. i was told that problem has been taken care of and was glad to hear my post made a difference. I think i am going to stick with ordering hardware from online and fish and plants from the stores.
I was extremely happy with the conversation on the phone hope some day to make a road trip back to check out some plants that I can't find around here. Over all it was a positive experience.

It seems like a lot of folks picture some sort of conspiracy among retail stores to pry open people's wallets as soon as they walk in the front door, and I can't speak for anywhere else, but I know that the Preuss folks do our best to get people their equipment, animals, plants, etc without breaking the bank... if they have to shell out a ton of money on one thing, they'll have less for the rest of the setup, which really hurts us in the long run.
I jumped on here to add these things because I don't want this thread to end on such a negative note; it's important to me, personally, and to the store as a whole, that people see us for who we are. Not just another arm of a corporate monster, but still that mom-and-pop store we were 25 years ago. Hopefully, I get to talk to all of you in person in the store at one time or another; if you are planning on coming in, give the store a call or PM me and I'll let you know if I'm going to be there.

I'm not trying to get in the middle of this AT ALL.....and like I said before I love the store and hope to support them soon! I just think Tritan probably had a point as far as overpriced equipment goes.

Whale Sale tomorrow!
"15% off everything you buy" at Preuss's tomorrow, Saturday Oct. 14! Just thought you'd like to know.

|Robert H||Prices on equipment are always a bone of contention with some people and is the reason retailers hate the internet and super chain stores. The big box mover internet sellers sell equipment for less than what local stores BUY IT FOR. It is a fact of life. You can not blame the store. Nobody is gouging. Local stores do what they have to do to stay in business, but a store like Preuss, (and I have seen ALL the pictures from Sarah...and it is incredible) has a diverse amount of products and many would be competetively priced to anyone. If they are high on that particular light fixture i am sure they are low on other things. I wish there was a store like that here. even something half as good!|

Personally, I've found Preuss to have higher prices ever since I've gone there, when they were in Okemos. BUT, for those higher prices I've found you get in return a very knowledgable staff, who won't just give you a bottle of "algae fix" without asking questions.
I can't WAIT to visit that new store....next time I'm in Lansing,

I'm sorry to hear you had a disappointing experience at our store. If you'd be so kind as to PM the details (which day this was, the employees you dealt with, etc.) of your visit it would be a great help to us to prevent future problems like this. There were two acting managers (myself and Sarah) on the floor today. Yesterday we were all, unfortunately, at the trade show in Chicago. Regardless, it is inexcusable that you weren't given more immediate satisfaction with respect to your concerns about the price.
With respect to our ability to stay in business, we have been around for more than 25 years with a continually growing customer base. We pride ourselves on offering the highest quality products and services and a price that is fair and commensurate with the value. From time to time, items end up with prices that are out-of-synch. This can be caused by simple human error, excessive discounting by online vendors, or our efforts lagging to find the best possible deal. I suspect these lights fall into the last category. I will check tomorrow morning, but I suspect we are paying more for them than Big Al's is selling them for. This tells me that we need to find a way to pay less in order to be more competitive. It is true that we have overhead costs that eclipse online vendors' by orders of magnitude, but it is also true that we should not expect you to pay double. Having brought this to our attention, we will certainly make an effort to find a better deal on these items so we can pass it along to our customers. We haven't survived this long nor grown this big by "screwing the consumers", but by using feedback like this a guide.
I can't guarantee the price of these lights will change (hopefully it will). It is more than shipping and sales tax that dictates price. The cost of a 23,000sq. ft. building on a prime street corner, electricity, water, insurance, dozens of emplyees, etc. must all be considered. Sometimes an item will simply cost much more than at an online vendor with minimal overhead costs. In most cases, however, we find a means of delivering the value for a price that is fair.
Sorry again for our failure to satisfy your needs on your trip to Lansing and we hope you'll visit us again to allow us to demonstrate the friendliness, quality, and value that Rick Preuss and his family have made the company famous for.
Feel free to call me at the shop with any concerns or further comments,

I decide to rope the wife into a "color tour" to lansing and we ended up at the preuess pet store. All I have to say is wow for 2 reasons. One is for the selection of fish and plants and salt water selection is amazing its huge! But I must say how do they stay in business with the prices they have on hardware? Anyone with a computer better not be buying hardware from them outside of a small item for there tank around 10 bucks or less.
I went there looking to upgrade my lighting to a double coralife T-5 lamp fixture x 2. I wanted one marine light and one freshwater light and I had printed the add from Fish Supplies, Online Fish Supplies, Aquarium Products, Aquarium Accessories at Big Al's Online and brought it with me knowing if the price was a bit high maybe i could get them to price match.
A bit high ! How about twice the price high !! Ok, the lights I wanted ran 47.95each at Big Als so for 106.95 that includes shipping I can have them in 3 days to my house. They had one light for 89.95 !!! OUCH !! I could just about get two for the price of there one. I figured if the price was 15.00 more I would buy them so i could just get them up and running tonight and support a great store but I wasn't born yesterday and that price is down right screwing the consumers !! That is over double the mark up! I checked local stores around my house and they can order them for around 60.00 a light that is reasonable so you can't tell me that preuss can sell them for a better price.
After showing the gal the price sheet from Big Als and asking if they could get close to the price , I wasn't expecting to get the lights for 47.95 I can undertand they have to cover there shipping costs and sales tax so I was willing to pay for that for the convience of walking out with the lights. She stated I could talk to the gal that orders on Monday but telling her I live an hour away that was out of the question. I told her that is to bad that there isn't a store manager that i could talk to as I would have walked out with the lights if they could have dropped the price a bit. The store employee stated they must be going on clearance for that price at big als, I said no T-5' s are new to the market and coralifes site still show the T-5 fixture as new on the web site. "oh thats right we just got them in 6months ago she claimed".
I did get a few plants that I can't find by me , and one black angel that was pretty pricy for his size but hard to find.
I just don't understand how they got that big of a store with prices like that.
