ok store...

So I went here last Saturday and it was crazy busy. Very big fish selection with over five isles of tanks. I skipped all the saltwater stuff because there was too many people slammed in the 3 foot wide isles saying "look its nemo". So I set off looking for the freshwater shrimp and found nothing. When I found a kid with 5 customers around him and his hands in a tank scooping someones new nemo up, I just figured this 15 year old must work here, i asked if they had fw shrimp and he said yes on the first idle. After searching that isle for 10 mins I found 4 tanks on the bottom level under 2 rows of empty tanks with some crazy over priced shrimp in them. So after 5 mins down on my hands and knees looking to see if they had any orange bees in the tank, the kid comes up and tells me "ya, we haven't had any bees in there for over a month" I just said "Ya, I would have known that 10 mins ago if I could actually see in the tank. Its literally on the floor." He said "well we have plenty of cherries, fire reds, and snowballs." " there's no way I'm paying 3 bucks for a cherrie, and 7 bucks for a friggin snowball" so I just grabbed an amano and some madagasgar ace plant (which wasn't too over priced for a rare plant) and was greeted by, well I guess this is one of the people who you guys are saying hated their lives, the pink haired chick at the front counter. Just give that chick your money and get out of there. lesve

Decent

I was there yesterday to buy some fish, The experience was overall decent, They do have a huge collection of both freshwater and saltwater fish.. and tons of equipment (tanks, lights, stands, tubing, food, co2 stuff).. I also saw the new LED edge in stock there. I also saw a pretty good collection of plants, Unless you are getting something rare.. you should be able to find it here.

They also sold a small portion of live food for $1 which wasnt bad. They do also sell co2 canisters.. a 5 pound canister is $149 .. which is expensive. A tank swap is $22.

The fish is not expensive but the equipment is.. i believe this is true for most LFS.

I do agree with most posters with the lack of staff.. I spent 20 mins roaming the isles to find someone... there were at most 3-4 people manning the isles which is insufficient for such a large store.

The lady behind the counter wasn't rude.. but she wasn't super nice either... but she did acknowledge me etc.. I asked them if the co2 canisters they sell have a CGA 320 port.. they didn't know that.. but they were helpful enough to open up a Miluwakee Regulator from the shelves and show me the connector. They said I could return the canister for unto a week for a refund or an instore credit after that.

I didn't interact with the staff a whole lot.. I told them what I wanted they bagged it up. Although they did tell me that the pea puffers only take frozen bloodworm.

I would go back here again... if I can't find something I need at Uncle Neds.

jasa73 Agreed. It's funny how everyone complains about the lady at the front counter. I actually had a conversation with her once when i bought a tank from them. I do think she hates isnt thrilled with her life. I choose to go to Uncle Ned's.

sixspeed The only thing i buy at tropic isle is livestock. I have been going to TI for a long time now, and i agree that the staff can be distant and the ladies at the front counter are miserable.

But once you do start talking with the employees they are very knowledgeable and helpful.

There saltwater fish selection is awesome, and they will order you whatever you want if you ask for it.

Mr. Appleton Agreed! The staff at Tropic Isle are actually quite friendly and helpful. I usually talk to Cady whenever we visit. She's always happy and quite knowledgeable. Definitely one of my favorite fish stores in the Boston area along with Skipton's.

discusmaniac This place has changed a lot. I never used to buy anything there but I have started buying plants from them. They have good collection and the price is reasonable on most of the plants these days. These days staff are very friendly and you will be treated even better if you visit the place more frequently. They will order plants for you if you don't find and will give you a call once they get the plants.

bjohnson0311 I was just there the other day and all of the people working working were youngish guys and all really helpful. No attitude at all. I purchased two flower shrimp, we'll see how they do although it would most likely be my fault if they died. Their equipment is ASTRONOMICALLY expensive.

timwag2001 i've been a long time tropic isle hater because of the rudeness of the owners. but things seem to have changed. the wife has been very nice to me the last few times that i've been and has gone out of her way to help me.

Fresh250 ON the topic of Tropic Isle. Prices are definitely way overpriced, however for the stock that they carry sometimes its worth the price so you dont have to ship from anywhere else and they carry alot of the rarities that nobody else has. People there suck and i have to wait a half hour sometimes 45 minutes following somebody around and nagging to get my fish pulled.

chhabi19 I bought two discus from there. One of them already died, the other one doesn't look good. Never going back for anything.

g33tar Ive been there a few times in the past month.. Both times I was asked multiple times by employee's if I needed any help with anything.

ALTHOUGH I was pretty upset that the blyxa they have in the nice planted tank near the door was NOT for sale haha. A nice girl did however show me other plants that were for sale that were also in that tank. And she did it with a smile on her face. Which was nice.

timwag2001 their staff is good. did you deal with the owners at all?

akarias Just wondering, has anyone else had any serious problems with the fish from Tropic Isle? I've had two fish from there with serious problem after Fintastic Fish went out (crying shame...only store around that did a full quarantine). My first fish from Tropic Isle did a tank wipe...the second I got died in a week. Just want to know if anybody else had similar problems, since at the very least the fish look very nice in the store.

Last thing is...they are considerably overpriced. +33% on like...everything. Coral beauties for 40, niger triggers for 40, all common $30 items.

Also on the contrary I've had pretty good costumer service.

timwag2001 their staff is ok. but the owners are extremely rude. they must really hate their lifes. they act like it at least. makes me wonder how they got their business running. were they happy people at one point and then realize that they hate their lifes. their staff are the only ones keeping that place going.

i like uncle neds much better. they are much more personable. they dont have as many things there but they are more than happy to order anything you need. i would rather order something and wait a week than spend 2 minutes in tropic isle
