Help with Algae Farm

I've been trying to grow some supplemental algae for my 3 otos. I filled a glass jar with water from my aquarium and put some stones and a shot glass inside the jar. Then I set the jar on a windowsill where it gets direct sunlight for about 5-6 hours a day plus a few more hours of ambient sunlight. It's been sitting there for over three weeks and still no algae. What am I doing wrong?
