nanous got my co2 checker and eheim set up, pulled out my sponge filter today. one of my super tigers is beautiful, almost black. ordering dario dario from msjinkzed.

nanous Won my BGA battle with h2o2. Have been increasing photoperiod since then. Dropped lights a few inches and scaled back photoperoid over the weekend.

Ordered amanos and super tigers from msjinkzed. They're awesome! Saw one berried, but haven't seen her since. Hopefully shrimplets turn up!

Ordered an Eheim 2217 and an inline heater. Wanted to get all the junk out of my tank for more real estate and a cleaner look. Love it, what an improvement just taking the heater out. How long should I wait before removing my sponge filter?

nanous post blackout, no3 levels super high... test turns blood red. fish seem okay, did a regular water change today. going to leave no3 high to help stifle BGA from growing back.

nanous lost one habrosus... he looked ill from the time i brought him home.

vacuumed as much of the BGA as I could while rubbing it off the leaves with my fingers. now in "blackout" for 4 days while dosing macros. hopefully i can beat this [censored][censored][censored][censored] back and keep my nitrates high to keep it at bay.

nanous local FS has blue tetra (cochu's) as well as "blue kerri" tetra (solid dark blue almost black), and emperor tetra... any preferences?

nanous dosed 5ml of nilcog's micro and macro ferts yesterday. no3 tested 0 today.

did a 10g water change, and dosed macros again. will continue increasing doses until i get a stronger no3 reading.

got my 2 extra habrosus. gang's all there!

what fish should i add?

ugh, BBA hit me so i've been leaving co2 on 1bpm 24/7. BGA is back with a vengeance... what an annoyance. It got worse AFTER I did a larger water change.

Ordered EI ferts which should be here today, hopefully that system provides the nutrients to knock out the BGA.

Suggestions for a new fish? My tank is dominated by red (the CPD and harlequins that school in the middle of the tank), would like something to mix it up. I was thinking ROAKing my red eyes and picking up a few blue tetra. I don't like that the red eyes are the largest fish in my tank. Any suggestions?

Current stock:
1x half beak
1x bumblebee goby
3x cory habrosus (buying 2 more asap)
1x panda cory, 1x cory agassizi?
3x red eye tetra
5x harlequin rasbora
7x CPD

nanous picked up a gH kH test today

kH - 4
gH - 11

Should these numbers be closer to one another?

nanous Plants, BGA responding well to c02. GBR dropped dead but I think it was natural, water tested all zeros with a pH of 6.8. This is despite dosing nutrafin ferts, adding osmocote and soil tabs, so I think I need to up my dosages. Ordering EI ferts from nilocg.

I think the drop in pH was caused by the c02.

However, I have started seeing BBA (wtf)... so I'm leaving c02 on 24/7 at a slower rate to eliminate swings.

nanous So much for that! Couldn't get the DIY co2 to create enough pressure to gas out of the diffuser... hooked up my spare 5lb co2 tank at about 1bpm, but I do need to add a needle valve for fine tuning.

Gave away my swordtail and pea puffer, snails still alive have perked up... new growth on plants.

nanous hit it with algeafix today... kick em while their down. also spotted some osmocote potshots at the hardware store and picked those up instead of filling gel caps.

osmocote plus: 15-9-12 plus 9 other essential nutrients.

osmocote potshots: 15-8-11 plus 6 other essential nutrients.

nanous Been in "total blackout" for 2 days, BGA is hurting. Looks like it's almost cleared up. Seeing a lot of new growth on my plants. Probably a combination of ferts and beating back the algea, as well as the DIY co2.

I initially had the air intake of my powerhead spewing bubbles to give the fish oxygen, but I removed it because it was probably sapping all the co2. Anyone know the actual physics of this? Though water movement was still good (170gph), a film was appearing on the surface due to the lack of agitation. I reinstalled the HOB I was initially using in tandem with the sponge/powerhead before I rebuilt the tank with black diamond.

My snails have been suffering, and I believe it's because a lack of calcium. Their shells look brittle. Before the black diamond, I had river rocks as a substrate which probably provided a host of minerals the black diamond is not. They thrived in the tank with rocks. Therefore, when I reinstalled the HOB i took out the filter medium and threw in the river rocks. This provides some surface agitation in addition to the movement provided by the powerhead, and will hopefully correct whatever deficiency is killing my snails.

I suspect that my lack of snails is throwing my pea puffer into kill mode, as it looks like a number of my fish have bites taken out of their fins (no blackness, whiteness, or moldiness, just round bite-looking chunks out of the edges and corners). My invertebrates have mysterious disappeared too (snails/shrimp). I think the water softness and the pea puffer basically did the snails in.

Ordered a bunch of needle valves and brass parts to do a serious DIY co2 experiment:

My plan is to put a ton of solution in a large cat litter container, with a 2 liter bottle as a co2 reservoir, check valve between them. The 2 liter will have water in the bottom and an airstone to filter the co2. Between the reservoir and the diffuser will be a 60psi safety valve, 60psi gauge to measure the pressure, and then two needle valve in series, one to turn the gas on and off, the second to fine tune it. I highly doubt I will be able to produce anywhere near this pressure, or that my seals won't fail before the pop off valve is triggered. We'll find out though. My next idea is to fill a Cornelius keg with co2, and then draw it off with this same rig rather than using a tank and regulator. I have tanks and regulators, but they get used for making tasty beverages! Curious how long a pressurized keg will last... easy enough to recharge too, and no risk of failure.

nanous Still getting hammered by BGA. Upping my ferts, added DIY co2, and cut light to basically blackout.

AguaTropical It looks much more filled in with your new plants! That piece of DW is awesome too. Good work haha
