Try this tutorial
I made this DIY canister filter and have it currently operating on my 2.5 gallon.
The tutorial and YouTube videos are great for getting a good idea about how to set it up. You obviously don't have to buy the otterbox, but I did and am really happy with how water proof it is.

Cut holes in the bottom of the bottle, fill the bottle up with filter floss and/or ceramic media, put the power head in the top of the bottle and you have yourself a cheap DIY shrimp friendly filter.|

|evilhorde||In my 10G shrimp tank, I use a small in-tank filter (the one that came with the 10G starter set). To keep baby shrimp out of it I buried the filter in a pile of Aquarium gravel behind an ornament. It makes a nice small waterfall, keeps the babies out and I can hardly even see it. If I blacked out the back of the tank it would certainly be invisible.|

|genocdex||i have that done in my 55g and ac 70, in a 10g tank i think it looks awful. i was thinking a 4$ pump would be all i need. i have litterally hundreds of feet of all sorts of sized tubing and attachments for them and i can get a seasoned filter out of my spare AC 50.|

I was planning to adding a plastic sheet to redirect the water direction. Maybe it suit your case too.
I have seen people using xmas moss/ plant root to slow down the water column as well.

cheap diy canister filter for my shrimp?
im thinking of trying to throw together a cheap canister style filter for my 10g shrimp tank. i was planning on using a cheapy inline water pump to move the water and maybe just a series of sponges for the internal (since its very low bio load). i want to stay away from air driven filters, and my AC 20 is stopping me from having floaters.
any one try anything like this?
