madness There might be a local planted tank hobby club in your area that has a PAR meter that someone loans out or rents. Many of them do.

With only one fixture to test it shouldn't take long to test it.

MatthewCarr Haha, thanks for the reassurance. I'm going to start with 2x 4 hour photo periods with a 4 hour break in between. There seems to be some debate but some people think it helps with CO2/Algae. I also like that the light would be on when I'm around the house.

madness Based upon the PAR data for the other Ray2 fixtures it seems like a reasonable bet that this fixture is in the 40-50 range at 12" depth. The 16" fixture is 49 mmol at 12" depth and the fixtures tend to increase in intensity at somewhat regular intervals as the fixture size increases.

Probably a bit more light than you would want for low tech but if you are planning to dose EI and Excel then you should probably be able to manage algae.

This is speculation, obviously, but you seemed like you could use some reassurance.

If it was my tank (and I have a 12" cube tank but I don't have an LED fixture on it yet) I would not be too worried.

MatthewCarr The light came today. It is super bright half blue and half white. Still waiting for the PAR ratings...

MatthewCarr Thanks, AquaVibrant has a "Finnex Ray II Ultra Slim LED DB - 10000k +" at 12". That seems to be the same as the one I ordered from Amazon. Unfortunately, the product description on AquaVibrant only goes down to 16". I will try to contact Finnex and post what I hear back.

Update: I guess the light is really new. Here is what Finnex customer service said:

Hello Matthew,
That light fixture is still so new, unfortunately we don't have any
additional information yet, sorry. That is a genuine Finnex product.
I'll contact you when more information is available. Sorry for the

I use to order my finnex lights. The manufacturers website redirects you to aquavibrant to purchase any of their products.

Finnex Ray2 12"

Hello, I just ordered a
Finnex Ray2 12" from Amazon Finnex Ray2 12" from Amazon
. I am having trouble finding specific information on it. Is what I ordered a genuine product? If so what are the PAR ratings?

The light will be going on top of a Mr Aqua 12" cube. I hope to keep the tank low-tech and use Excel + EI. Will algae be a problem?

This is my first aquarium and I'm still wrapping my head around the whole thing. I have found this forum to be a great source of information and inspiration.
