Westchester, Rockland, NYC

Hi,

New to forum, hopefully am posting this correctly in Tri-State LFS. For Westchester County, Exotic Pet Warehouse in Yonkers changed names (to Aquarium & Critter Warehouse), then went out of business. Pet Place II in Nanuet is still in business, but is not in Westchester, should be moved to Rockland County.

In Westchester County: Petland Discounts, 337 Downing Drive, Yorktown Heights is worth a visit. Tanks are all on separate filters and Roger, who runs the store, is very experienced and helpful and will pre-order for you if he doesn't have want you want. Nice barbs, decent selection of fish for a small store.

Pet Supplies Plus, 3333 Crompond Rd, Yorktown Heights, great freshwater fish selection but shared filter and sick fish problems in my experience. We bought live plants from there, stupidly didn't quarantine, then had to isolate and medicate a fish for 8 weeks (!!!) for ich, tried every method but ich was heat-resistant and fish didn't get better till we nuked the quarantine with malachite green. I still visit this store just to see the selection but we no longer buy from there. Their black ruby barbs had fin rot recently - seems like there's always a sick tank or two (on a shared filter).

Petco, 2350 Central Park Ave, Yonkers. Worth a visit. Beautiful odessa barbs and yellow honey gourami in there yesterday. Nice selection for a chain.

Petsmart, 2458 Central Park Ave, Yonkers. Visited once. Very emaciated and sick dwarf blue gourami in one of the tanks...shared filter. Healthy looking zebra danio and madagascar rainbowfish in other tanks....hopefully all stay that way.

Also, in NYC: Petco on 991 2nd avenue is a good staple store. Same limited selection as other chains but healthy looking fish, nice gouramis.

f Majalis This is a resurrected thread, but just in case someone runs into this and thinks it's still accurate: Kings Aquarium on 18th ave in Brooklyn has closed. There's a new good aquarium shop locally in Archer Fish Aquariums on 514 79th St, Brooklyn, NY 11209 (near 5th ave).
