I have some 2 gallon tanks would the 15 be small enough?
I currently use the azoo STUFFED with media, on LOW. I would love knowing my betta tanks are 'all clean'.
I also have a 6 gallon tank, is this something i can 'add on' and run every so often to just clean every so often?
Does the 15 have the skimmer, while i don't have saltwater tanks, I get that 'slime' on the water top from fertz.

Thanks for the info.
This was for a friend. She wanted the setup like the PF40-UV, but needed it for a 55g tank. That's why I started looking into the PSE1. She has a canister already setup (fluval) and wanted to use the hob as a mechanical filter and also wanted UV to attack any bad bacteria.
Do you make a UV hob filter big enough for a 55g? Or would the PSE1 be it?

All great questions! Let's take them one by one.
1. Yes, you are correct in that both good and bad bacteria are affected by UV Sterilization and that the microorganisms must pass by the UV Bulb in order to be killed off. Any bacteria that are attached to the surfaces within the aquarium or filter will remain unharmed. The second part of your question is also a yes. The primary function of our UV products is to act as an aid to inhibit algae growth. If you are establishing the bacteria in a new tank set-up, then UV Sterilization is not necessary since there should not be any algae present in your tank.
2. The Aquatop PSE-1 is primarily a Protein Skimmer with the added benefits of UV and a filter. If you are only looking for a UV Sterilizer, Aquatop recommends the UVE-7 or the SP Internal Filters with UV.
3. Yes, Protein Skimmers are primarily used in Saltwater setups due to the excess organics that accumulate on the surface on the water. They are very rarely used for Freshwater setups and would only be used under special conditions.

If I am understanding how UV works. It will kill all bacteria, but the majority of good bacteria that are needed for the nitrogen cycle are not affect because they are on surfaces such as bioballs, in gravel and not free swimming, therefore not going thru UV rays? Would you avoid this type of filtration while trying to establish the bacteria for the nitrogen cycle?
Also, looking for one that will be powerful enough for a 55 gal tank. So, would it be your Aquatop PSE1? This is a mechanical filter as well as a UV & skimmer.
Lastly, this is for a freshwater tank. Is skimmer used solely for saltwater setups? Any use in freshwater?

We understand. UV can be new territory for many hobbyists and we encourage customers to do their research. The housing in the unit is designed just for UV and while we can’t give you a specific lifespan, we can tell you confidently that as long as you break it, the housing will last for years. Bob Goemans just published a book and he addresses UV technology very thoroughly in the filtration chapter.
