IWANNAGOFAST sorry to hear this carlos! That really sucks, can't believe he would leave the door unlocked, especially in Oakland.

Don't give up on it, take a break while you find your new place and once you settle in, start up again

+1 on this.

FisheriesOmen Lets see. . . there are about 58,119 members on TPT?

I think that should be enough to intimidate him. Just give us a time

zergling Sorry to hear about what happened Carlos! Wish you and your family the best in your move.

As for quitting the hobby, I'm sure everyone will tell you not to do that. They are, for the most part, correct - why quit a hobby when the grief was caused by the landlord?

However, I have a slightly different opinion....

Hobbies are supposed to use up your time (and money ) and return happiness in exchange. When this is not happening (regardless of it being directly or indirectly due to the hobby itself), sometimes it can be good to step away and spend a little time away from it. This lets you do other things and "get some perspective". The great thing about the aquarium hobby is that the itch will eventually come back. Anywhere from a few days to a few years. When that itch comes, you will be able to go back in to the hobby with a different frame of mind -- a more experienced one at that, as you've already had time to think about what the hobby means to you and where its boundaries are.

One thing to keep in mind though, is that an aquarium is a very good way for you to bond with your son later on, if he develops an interest in the hobby. I know I always "blame" my dad for having so many tanks in the house when I was growing up

lochaber I'm sorry to hear that, and good luck with finding a new place. Hopefully things work out better in the long run.

I don't get the unlocked door thing... if a door has a lock, I'm going to use it, even out in 'safe' rural areas. Not locking doors in Oakland is, well... I think that alone is a statement on your roommates level of responsibility/awareness.

Might be worth checking with a lawyer to see if you could make a case in small claims court. If you don't have access to a lawyer, the Oakland Public Library has several times a month where you can meat with a lawyer for like 10-15 minutes to ask questions, etc.

Good luck.

bennyjam I feel your pain. I had 10 gallon destroyed by my roommates friends drunkenly fighting. One if them was pushed into it. Smashed the glass. Water everywhere and all the fish and plants were killed. Luckily the guy that was pushed into it wasn't serious hurt. The culprits never offered up cash to replace it. People suck sometimes. Now I live with my girlfriend and I have the tank in a side room that won't see much traffic. You live and you learn.

Oxl Glad to hear you'll be moving out, don't even bother trying to fix the tank at this point since you'll be moving it all anyway. Just take a breather from the hobby except for trawling craigslist aquarium ads so you can treat yourself to an even bigger tank in your safe new residence.

speedie408 So sorry for your loss Carlos. That tank was pimpin too. I feel for you bro.

As for the nimrod of a landlord who lives with you, he seems like the type that won't even know what hit him if something happened so don't waste your time and effort. You're already taking the right move by moving out ASAP. Leaving doors unlocked is not cool at all in my book, especially because you have your family inside while you're gone.

Don't quit but use this opportunity to start fresh. Make your next tank even better. You got the skill so it'll be cake.

Keep your head up man.
