vnghost if you want a 10 gallon, buy only the tank, think about what you want to do with it, and go from there. im no expert but i have bought many kits and end up replacing everything. a 10 gallon is about 10 bucks and gives you so much more space and options when it comes to fish and plants. a dome reflector and cfl will light it with as much light as youd like with different cfl wattage choices. itll take you longer to piece everything together but youll end up getting exactly what you want and need for YOUR plans. good luck.

Lovemybetta I thought the same and decided not to take it. Do you think just a regular starter kit with fluorescent lights would be a good option? Petsmart is selling 10 g top fin kit for 39 bucks. I am also considering the fluval edge which looks so amazing planted. Geeze I can't make up my mind!

vnghost I have one and got rid of the main piece that made the chi a chi. I added a fluval 13watt cfl. And a hob filter, no co2 low ferts and it was good. Shut it down when I bought a spec v. For 30 dollars u can't lose, but ur really only buying a 5 gallon tank for 30 bucks, since the main console light filter is kind of useless for plants.

Fluval Chi for low tech non co2 set up

I might be able to grab this for a reasonable price, but I am not sure if this is the right set up for a low tech non co2 planted tank.

If I pay $30 for it, and add in a proper filter and buy an apporiate light, can I make this work? Or is it better to buy the standard 5-10 gallon starter kit and update as needed.

Yikes, there are so many options!
