- Put your light on a timer
- Dose ferts. I go light on mine as I have no Co2 (just generic Excel). You can go full EI or PPS with the Co2 running, if you are willing to do weekly water changes (I do weekly or bi-weekly). Several options, the easiest/cheapest I have found are from Nilocg here on the board.
- plants - everything you can get! As I said elsewhere, I took anything that was in a trim pack or RAOK here on the boards - quantity rather than quality. Half of the species died or did poorly for me, the other half did well. It looked nice and lush so I accepted that and rolled with it.

Beautiful tank! I was drawn to this thread because I am starting my very first planted tank, and I seem to have a very similar setup in mind. Thus far I have gathered: 29g tank, Fugeray Planted+, 2 bags of Eco-Complete, and an AC 70 + AC 20. I also have a DIY CO2 rig set up. I haven't even started the tank, these are all materials that I have in my house. Can you give me advice on which plants that I should start with, as well as any supplemental liquids I should dose with? Thanks!

I'm just running the Planted +, I hung the old Fugeray over some houseplants at my desk
Here is the latest trim:

I think i'll be asking for a planted light for christmas. Or just buy one for myself are you only using it by itself or are you using both lights? my Two ferns are doing pretty good so maybe that's a sign. Just got a bunch of red ludwigia last week. See what happens.
I'm waiting on more reviews of the planted and they are starting to show up in the Finnex forum. how long have you had the new light?

I'm on 9.5 hours a day right now, and just stepped up to a Finnex Planted +. Haven't written it up yet, but a FANTASTIC light. the fissidens that I thought I killed has started to send out little bright green growth after a week or 2.
I think my success on this tank has been from:
eco-complete (easy to deal with)
good light (Finnex)
not being picky about what grows. - BIG one there. Started off with Swords and Java fern as my 'goal' - but planted a BUNCH of different stuff - things from RAOKs and trim/pack sales that I never heard of. Half of it died - ripped it out and let what was happy take over. If I had kept beating my head against Amazon Swords and Java Ferns I would have a sad, empty tank.

|Kaduhn1||nice work, I was also sent to your link a while back from Finnex. I've literally had the same setup going for the last year with the same light and insert fired clay substrate recently added instead of rocks. I do PPS ferts from the same guy, i was doing it on a lighter schedule due to no CO2. My plants look like crap compared to yours though. I just recently added CO2 hoping that would help, that was a few days ago so nothing to show of it yet. Moving to full on PPS now, hopefully the light is enough. What do you do for light period? I saw your fert regimen and water changes in a previous post.|

I don't doubt that they aren't doing well under one t-8 - just isn't enough light for the depth of the tank. You might also look into dry ferts - they have helped my plants a ton and are very cheap. (I bought mine from Nilocg here on the board - get the already mixed, just add water kit. I dose at half the recommended level since I'm running lowish light and no Co2)
hope that helps!

|jmf3460||JBrady your tank is beautiful. I too have the "how many species can I fit into one tank" bug like you and have been criticized for it many times. Your tank reminds me of mine a lot. I expecially love how you had the anubias stuck to suction cups on the side of the tank...can you tell me more about how you attached them?|

36gl Bowfront Lighting question
Hi JBrady, I love how your tank looks. I just recently converted my 36 Bowfront from my African Cichlid tank to a Planted tank with Fancy Guppies. I had an existing 20gl Planted tank that I have had running for about 3 years. So I transfered everything from the 20gl to the 36, Except the lighting because it was a custom fixture on the 20gl. I am curious what you did to your 36's hood to create the correct lighting for the planted tank. I currently have a 20" PowerGlow 20w in it. And within a week my plants have gone downhill with loss of color, brown areas holes and areas that have died off to a clear color. I have a few Anubias and honestly, I don't remember what the others were when I bought them a few years back.
Did you take the fixture out of the hood and replace it with another? Also, are you just running one single bulb.
I'm posting this here because you seem to have got it right and are familiar with this tank.
Thanks a bunch :-)
