These seem really cheap , do you know what k they are ?? Also
Would they be good at growing plants ?

I paid 22 for a giesemann bulb and it's very good but if these work well could save me some pennies

gl0ckage http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/162286

Im looking at that, does that mean i can use 2 58w bulbs?
EDIT: Cant use 58w because they only in 5ft long?

Because if i have 120watts i should have 2.6 WPG. if that matters.

Im thinking buying that from wickes, opening the enclosure, taking the ballast out and the connectors and attaching them to my hood.

dannylc Maybe a 24-39W twin T5, I am sure someone else will come along and confirm what sort of light wattage you should be aiming for.
07-24-2012 12:31 AM
gl0ckage What watt would i be looking for?

I got one thats 20w.

Or do i need a high wattage controller + high wattage bulb?
07-24-2012 12:17 AM
dannylc You could get an Arcadia twin light unit about 40 I guess and just screw the bulb clips with reflectors into your hood.
07-24-2012 12:14 AM
gl0ckage I cannot find some that are smaller than 4ft? Tanks is 3ft but dont want the light the full length.

Any other alternatives?

dannylc Yeah just screw them in, but make sure you have good air flow through it as they get quite hot.

I will post a pic of mine later once I finish playing with the scape lol

gl0ckage 36"X15"X18"

So get them hanging fittings can be "Surface mounted" so i can build into my hood?, get some wires from BnQ. Sounds too easy :p Ill give it a blast tomorrow Thanks.

I wont be injecting Co2, im trying to get it close to a closed tank as possible, so plants + snails + fish and shrimp. Starting with plants first though.

dannylc I used x2 of these but they have other sizes etc

Search ebay for item number: 280922993824

Then just go to B&Q etc and get some 1mm twin and earth and a plug, wire it up and done

Bulbs are from here with next day delivery only just over 20 for x4 54w T5HO 6500k.

samjpikey Hey man I live in England , I bought the Hagen t5ho over head lamp , got it from zoo plus.uk , they do a 2x24 watt or A 2x39 watt , I have the 24 watt and I only use 1 bulb over my 30 gallon and it does the job very well , you could quite happily run 2 bulbs if u inject co2 , I did build my own hood to work with it , it clamps on to either side of the tank . Hope this helps

Some help for a newbie.

Hey guys, the name is Cameron.

Just starting a planted tank in my 46 gallon. But im having trouble getting stuff together for the lighting.

Im making my own wooden hood and im really confused as what to buy for lighting? Ive read a few posts on here about it and still confused.
I live in the Uk so any Uk sites would be very helpful.

Ive got a 20W lighting controller that holds 1 bulb. But that wont suffice.

What other easy options are open to me?

fluorescent t5 bulbs? With a ballast? What do i plug them into etc?

LED's? How would i connect and plug them in etc?

Compact fluorescent lights? Where can i buy fittings + plug them into mains etc.

My local DIY shops are Homebase / BnQ / Wickes?
Any help in the form of a shopping list would be AMAZING!

I'm wanting this for my newly born son to act as a night light and have some pretty things to look at.
