I love the Pet Shanty, but another great choice is The Shark Aquarium in Hillside. Its on the West Bound side. Huge fish selection. Plants arent that good though.

My girlfriend and I went "Fish hopping" this weekend. We live in Philadelphia, but decided to venture to North Jeresey to see what was available.
What we found out:
Animals and Things: Great store for odd ball plecos, great selection of tropical fish. Not so good for plants.
The Pet Shanty: Excellent selection of plants and fish and yes they know what they are talking about.
Hanover Pets: Not worth the trip. (Called some thing else but forgot the name, begins with an "A". It is in the Home Depot Shopping Center in Hanover, NJ.
Absolutely Fish: Too expensive! For everything!
Next weekend we are going to check out Pet, Pets, Pets.

|k8y||Try Just Fish in Newton NJ. Clean tanks, healthy fish and very knowledgeable staff. 973 383 0333 and prices are like 1/2 of Ab. fish|

|tazcrash69||Have you tried FishTown on 17 south in Ramsey? I haven't been there about 3 years, but they had very common stuff for decent prices the last time I was there. And the tanks were clean.|

Mega Pets - Parsippany, New Jersey
Mega Pets is a horrible place. The tanks are unkempt, the staff is unknowledgable, and the livestock looks sickly. I saw a pirannha in a 10 gallon tank and painted tetras. Are there any other good LFS's in Northern New Jersey?
I've been to Absolutely Fish but it has exorbitant prices. I'm pretty much looking for common fish that are healthy and decently priced.
