Krystal907 The answer always lies in the True North!! As in, shameless plug for my home state...which would be AK.

sockfish Nope--all my relatives are in Texas and Kentucky and they never come north of the Ohio river....!

duff No offense taken! Yes, Cali folks think Texans are peculiar in as much as Texans think Cali folks are peculiar But I admit I have family in Mountain View CA and they never come to Texas... Possibly the answer lies in the True North and we're both missing something?

~ gnomecatcher you make me laugh!

Gnomecatcher For the record, I have never been surfing, nor do I ever even go to the beach.

Texas Mexican food is peculiar. Everything coming out of Texas is peculiar.

EDIT: Not to be offensive or anything.

duff Ok Ok, good point, that would worth its weight in gold! We have no offers of great surfing here in Dallas but the mexican food is fabulous . Though, I doubt much of a draw away from true north! LOL

sockfish OK you sun lovers--the nice thing about the weather here is that it keeps the folks from our San Diego corporate headquarters out of our lab until late July. We appreciate the lack of oversight (!)

They say they need to be able to go surfing at a moments notice, I can't seem to get them interested in surfing Lake Superior though:

Gnomecatcher Sockfish, my friend, you need to get down here and enjoy the California sun. Despite our apparent lack of seasons, our winters are quite mild. If we ever do get around to winter.

duff Hey Sockfish - I did make it confusing - My 1st riparium is 8g (the pictures are on page 1 of this thread) then I am in the finishing stages of setting up the new one (the picture above)... My bad as I should have had more foresight to name the threads better - oops...

I'm so glad to hear that your plants are settling in and growing! I'm a newbie to Ripariums myself and find myself much more fascinated by them then my regular tanks.

You are in the north! My cousin's are from MN and one was married in January just outside the Canadian boarder at a lovely resort up there. Sad part is that it was January and -20! I can handle most cold but that was unreal!!! High heels and -20 don't mix! Stay warm - I hear there is another round of winter headed your way.

sockfish Duff--this new build is looking great! It looks like you've got another thread for this one?

My own plants are taking off--the bacopa I've already cut some shoots, stuck them through the rafts and had them root. Couple new leaves on the pandas. Added a crypt from another tank for kicks. Then added an [ugly] internal filter that came with the new betta tank but was too strong for the Betta. I'm hoping the water will look a bit better with the filter. All of this is still temporary as I wait for the right tank and as I experiment with the plants--I'm such a noob.

I'm hoping to see some plants in the nurseries around here in a month or so since I want a few more and different plants to play with.

duff Poor waterfall is sitting empty ~ boohoo... All the shrimp but three are moved over to the new tank. The idea for the AC filter was a good one but in the end the suction was not enough after the power went out and the motor is history now. I have ordered a filter (Ovation 380 Submersible Filter) to try a new idea. I am going to break this one down and try it again now that I have learned a bit from the original set up. This time the filter will push the water instead of pulling. I have a small power head in it now keeping the water moving with a makeshift filter on it.

I'm also planning on re-doing the waterfall completely. Thinking I might angle it in the corner this time with the return coming up from the corner. It will also give me a bit more room on the back side for 3 containers instead of two. I also hate the substrate and will be visiting Hydrophyte for more Ion Brick as I am very very happy with the color and grain size.

I'm thinking I might also try a silicon/peat background above the water line to make the plants stand out a bit more... I know this is more complicated then a riparium needs to be but I just have to give it a try!

hydrophyte Wow that's looking great. That baby panda bamboo has grown pretty well for you.

I like those lights!
03-18-2012 04:56 PM
Gnomecatcher OOoo me likey! Wow those lights are really bright, they're even getting down onto your substrate. But then I guess your plants aren't big enough to shade it.

Is starfire glass really that different? Dangit, don't tempt me to spend more money!

mdreher Nice work Duff! Are you gonna start a seperate thread for this one? Is that pandanus I see in the back? If it is you'll have a great plant soon. Mine has really taken off. It's about two feet above the planter and the roots reach the gravel. It's an awesome plant.

duff Finally was able to gather everything and set the tank up for a bout two weeks now and the tank is now cycled. The starfire glass is amazingly clear! The last few pieces to go in are the wood (still soaking) and a few more crypts from my main tank. Everything seems to be happy so far and I am thinking of staring to transfer over the fishies from my 20T tank over the next week or so. (Pygmy Cories, Chili Rasbora's and one LF Albino Pleco).

The water level is now at about 3/4 full and a bit more pleasing to the eye but still playing around with the final level.

sockfish Well, nothing on the horizon yet. I had to put the riparium on hold and solve my Betta's housing problem. Ordered an inexpensive 5 gal rimless for him...once that's set up and payday rolls 'round, we'll see about the riparium tank!
