thelub First off, welcome Kogre. You did good by reading up on here, but it sounds like you just need to spend some more time reading to see what fits you best.

Filter media won't really compete with your substrate. They will work together. You'll only have as much nitrifying bacteria as there is food (ammonia) in the system to feed it. Doing a fishless cycle with ammonia won't hurt your substrate.

Don't worry about carbon in your filter. It wears out in a matter of days anyway. Save it to use for removing traces of medication or to clear up cloudy water.

Kogre Thanks for the reply.

How about the second post?

Also, will a fishless cycle with ammonia hydroxide harm the substrate or slow the process?

Substrate Choice's Pro's/Cons

i chose to go with MGOCPM capped with Eco and also one capped with Floramax

these were both readily available at my LFS so it made it easy choices

read the sticky and the entire comments below the OP, lots of good stuff in there

Kogre Also the tank comes with 2x 1250 lph with media. Will bacteria in the filter media compete with bacteria soil? Is it safe to use all provided media? I think it comes with carbon which might screw with the carbon in the soil?

Sorry for the double post.

Substrate suggestions

Hi all.

I've recently decided to purchase a 600 litre tank and I'd like to go heavily planted. I've not yet decided about the kind of plants that'll be in there but the tank will be tropical and not necessarily a biotope.

I've read a few articles and have become confused by the abundance of information available and the various methods of achieving a beautiful looking planted aquarium.

I thought an inch and a half of soil with the same amount of sand would be enough but after having read everything it has become apparent that there's more to it.

Can anyone offer the pros and cons of the various methods out there to help a budding newbie out? I'd appreciate any help.

Many thanks for your time.
