Interesting surface dweller that can be kept with other peaceful fish of his size. Smaller surface fish will be considered food. Needs live food: flies, small crickets, earwigs, moths, daphnias, anything that stays at the surface.

This fish will eat just about anything that floats on the surface and drifts past its eye. In other words, it doesn\'t need live food. Very interesting fish.

My butterfly fish will some times take dry food, but only when they are very hungry.Normally they take only live food like spiders, moths and flys.

I think that the African Butterfly is a great addition to my freshwater aquarium. Something that happens with all Butterfly Fish is that they jump. They are not picky eaters. You can feed them flakes i found out, but they still need live food. This fish is agood fish for begineers and is my favorite fish in my aquarium.

This is a fascinating fish that makes an exelent additione to the comunity aquarium provided that there are no small surface dwellers. It is quite easy to feed and will take dry food in a pinch. Be sure to keep a tank containing Butterfly Fish very well covered. This precaution will not prevent the fish from jumping and injureing itself on the cover glass.

Seems to preffer planted tanks, especially ones with broad leaves on the surface. Will eat about anything on the surface that will fit in its mouth. Will also eat guppies and fry.

I have one of this fish and I feed it : dry krill and red mosquito larve. And sometimes a fly or living mosquito larve. Fish that are under 1.5" are not save to keep together with this fish, because they will end up in it's belly.

Raymond

The butterfly fish is not a picky eater. They do not like cloudy or dirty water though. Make sure when buying you buy from a clean, well kept tank or store. Also make sure the fish eats a food good for your other fish in the aquarium. The butterfly fish does well with chilchids but not other types of surface dwellers.

bogus

This fish is not for beginner aquariumists. It eats anything that floats by its nose.

steve

An interesting fish, its ok in a tank with no other surface dwellers, but be warned if it gets hungry enough it will go hunting for anything it can swallow. Say goodbye neons....

Brett

Extremely interesting fish, does very well with angelfish. Certain breeds of grommies seem to pick on the butteryfly though. Absolutely loves formula 1 flake food.

Athough it seems that many people have different opinions on this website,I think The affrican butterfly is a very gracefull fish to keep they will eat live food and most but not all will eat freeze-dried and frozen foods. They do eat whatever comes around but they seem to enjoy the frozen bloodworms.I have 3 in my community tank and they have only eaten my smallest male guppy once. They are truly wonderfull and require at the very least a 15 gallon tank as they get fair sized and very territorial when space is restricted. thank you

nina

Very interesting fish. My African Butterfly has a very nice temperment.

Katie

A unique and mesmerizing fish. A true master of patience since it will wait for an edible morsel to float by and catch it's eye. I have trained mine to approach when i dangle a wax worm on the waters surface...GREAT FISH !!

krischen

Yes indeed, very interesting fish. Not to mention beautiful.I have one I keep with 6 tiger barbs,a black ghost knifefish and a elephant nose. They all seem to get along.I'd recommend this fish to someone who has a nice lid on their tank though.
