Flagfish are great for algae, but be warned that once the algae is under control they may decide to snack on your plants.

We have a pair of females and they are one of our favorite fish. Very social by nature, they are always "visiting" with other species. Females aren't showy, but we read males can be more aggressive.

Great algae eaters - love spirulina flakes and Hikari Algae Wafers too - they seem to feel comfortable in a small group - haven't seen any agression yet, perfect for algae control in smaller tanks - very hardy fish!

I have kept these in a 65 gal planted tank. They are great algae eaters, they are good with other fish if they don't have frilly fins. They will nip and chase ones that do. They don't like Bettas.

This has turned out to be a great fish for controlling annoying hair algae in my tank. I have a pair that spends most of its time hunting for algae and other food. Neither the male nor female seems to bother my other fish, although they will sometimes chase the fish away when they are eating. I have read that they can be exceptionally aggressive during breeding, but I haven't had the opportunity to observe the fish breeding yet. Keep an eye on them and don't add them to any tanks where they are likely to be picked on.

Robert

Had 1m/1f in a 29g with 3 Rams and an Angelfish. Angel and Ram fins were badly nipped, but not as badly after the female was removed.

I added one to get spirogyra under control. It decided stargrass is more delectable and removed every new bud from a large bush overnight. It also tore a few chunks out of some val nana in what seemed to be a newcomer's dominance display. It was moved to the backyard pond shorty after. Pretty fish with funny behavior.

The colors in the American Flag Fish are beautiful. I purchased 4 of them to go into my 125 gallon aquarium just yesterday. They were acclimated and placed in a 20 gallon aquarium that houses cherry red shrimp (this allows me to tell if a fish I am buying will eat them) and by morning their were about 4 left. The AFF didn't even bother to eat breakfast. Hmmm... Wonder why.

Anyhow just as a warning these guys MAY eat your shrimp and will nip fins on larger fish.
