In rivers and lakes rich in plant life from nothern South America to the Amazon basin, though not in Rio Magdalena. Sex: Sexes can only be positively determined by examination of the genital papillae; the fins of the male are pointed and there are reddish-brown markings on the head; These are lacking on the female who has a dark patch on her dorsal. Social Behavior: A territorial, gentle, peaceful species which does not burrow. It pairs, forms nuclear family and can be aggressive when spawning. Breeding: Recommended moderately acid, soft water with a pH 6.0-6.5, a hardness around 5 dGH and temperatures between 25-28C. An open breeder, the female will spawn as many as 1,000 eggs on rocks.Fry are carefully cared for. These fish come in various colors, most common are Gold and Green, more rare are the Red who can be very pricey, I have yet to see one for myself. These are my favorite fish and they have quite the personalities. They are quite easy to care for, but only consider the purchase if you have a large tank! Despite some controversy, some say they can be put in the same tank as a Discus, obviously DONT DO THIS! *chuckle*

They're a fascinating fish to have though I wouldn't recommend them for a planted tank. They'd be all too happy to graze on your beautiful plants.

One of the true gems of the cichlid world. They grow quite fast, are hardy, and usually are very even tempered.....great fish!

I have 2 green Severums in a 55G. One has grown quite a bit bigger than the other one. The bigger one picks at the little one so bad and has torn the fins badly. It will not let it come out even to eat. It is too bad because they are beautiful fish but mine one is very aggressive. The larger one even goes after my 6 inch clown loaches.
