After trying unsucessfully to own goldfish I bought a thick lipped gourami and he lives happily with my pleco. What a great fish! Loads of personality, quick and fun to watch and very hearty! Much easier to care for (imo) than the goldfish I had. I would recommend this type of gourami to anyone starting out, as long as you have a nice tank setup and a heater.
