Puntius titteya, or Cherry barbs, are Asian fish native to Sri Lanka. Males are a deep, attractive red color, while females more brown and beige. They are native to slow, shallow, shaded streams with heavy silt and leaf debris. Cherry barbs are omnivorous and readily eat commercially prepared foods. Stocking in trios is advised, at least 2 females per 1 male. They are shy, peaceful community fish and should be kept in groups of at least 4-5 fish. The minimum recommended tank size is 20 gallons. Cherry barbs are most comfortable in tanks where both planted hiding areas and open swimming areas exist. They enjoy floating plants. These fish are known to jump- a cover is highly recommended.

I find Cherry barbs to be incredibly hardy, and unlike their infamous cousins the Tiger barbs they are totally peaceful. They tend to school loosely, you won't see a big group of them in the same place but solos or pairs dotted around the tank. I rate them 10/10!
