This rare plant is hard to find in naturally existing environments due to it's demanding requirements. It is a carnivorous plant that is in danger of extinction. Since the early 1990's early projects have been going on in an attempt to restore the plant. It can be grown in a variety of lighting conditions from low light to high.

Aldrovanda vesiculosa is a bladderwort and makes a nice floating plant for the experienced hobbyists, can multiply quite rapidly in a suitable environment. Soft water is very important, (Low KH/3 or less & GH/5 or less) Lighting needs to be within the 2.5~3wpg range. CO2 injection is an absolute necessity. Fertilization should be diligent, NPK, TE and Fe. It needs to be in a tank that is clean and stable w/good flow, it does not do well in an algae prone tank since it is a floater and closest to the lighting. It is a member of the Droseraceae family or sundew.

@WoefenxXx: It is not a bladderwort, it is more related to plants like the Venus Flytrap and Sundew species. It has closing traps much like a Venus Flytrap. Winter-hardy plants produce winter growth called turions, they sink to the bottom of the tank where they rest until the water becomes warmer.

IME an acidic environment and plenty of CO2 makes this an easy plant.

This plant has just been added to the IUCN's (international union for the conservation of nature) red list (19/10/2012). CITES sources the IUCN's red list for its criteria of endangered or threatened species so the chances of this plant entering on to the Appendix I is likely. This will heavily regulate the sale and trade of this species, both at the national and international level. http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/162346/0
