This is one of my favorite fish. They're NOT schoolers, rather, they stake out small individual territories and "hover" in them. The males will display at each other, but I have never observed any actual aggression. The males are fantastic when in full flare, I've never seen another fish that looks anything like them! The females are much more plain, and resemble female Cherry Barbs.
These fish have a reputation for requiring soft water, but I've managed to keep a small school in my very hard well water for almost 2 years so far. I did acclimate them slowly. A heavily planted tank is strongly recommended.
They definitely prefer slow water, and rarely venture for long out into the main water column before returning to their territories.
A very shy, but very beautiful little fish!
How are these Tetra with other species of Tetra. I have Colombian, Buenes Aries, Black Widow, Black Neon, Cardinal and Lemon. They all get on great and sometimes, though not often, they all shoal together and look fantastic swimming from one side of the tank to the other.
