    You would need a heavily planted tank to help with Nitrates. Plants can only take in so much. Water changes are always the best solution and for a 10 gallon tank with the fish you have so that they have nice swimming area. Yep, no way of getting away from weekly water changes...
    I wouldn't worry about the Gourami, but you may have helped him relax! Mine and other types of fish have done the same thing when first introduced to the tank. They calm down once they find that the reflection is not a threat.
