Hi Jason. Its good see someone else who likes these fish. I'm not sure they really need a tannic environment to live in even though they _only_ live in such environments in the wild. This issue might be the single biggest controversy in the tiny world of NA Native fishkeeping. I'm keeping mine in dechlorinated tap water and I bought it from a guy who raises them in well water with a ph of 8. Don't the let the scary stories about how hard these are to keep prevent you from getting one.
Hey boringname, I am new to this forum and haven't posted yet...BUt is just saw your profile pic and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I grew up just north of the Pinelands in NJ and Banded Sunfish are my favorite. I watched a lake go through stages of succession as I grew and as the lake acidified the banded sunnies moved in and proliferated. Unfortunately, that lake has since been dredged to "clean" it for the New Yorkers that moved into the suburbs and wanted a "pretty" lake!!! It is unfortunate really, the sunnies have disappeared and the great plants and associated animal and plant community has been ruined, until people leave NJ alone.
Anyway, sorry for the dribble, just reminiscing, I live in Missouri now and my goal is to establish a blackwater tank and have some for myself to enjoy. Be Well, Jason
