I am highly interested in the altered physical science involved with keeping aquaria in nonstandard tanks. A traditional square tank has a giant opening which sets the stage for certain factors such as surface exchange rates and evap rates and most of the design is centered around these open-topped industry constants. When you set up an ecosystem in a vase, or a fluted jar, or a mason jar with a lid the dynamics change *drastically* and they can be manipulated into fully-functioning ecosystems, even at the coral reef level (see youtube channel if youd like)
You'd be hard pressed to find a rugged indoorsman who has spent as many years with jar ecosystems, if that's you thing stop on by
