Hi Melissa,
I do remember you from the OCA meeting last week. I am using 3M Colorquartz S-grade sand for ALL of my tanks. It is no longer manufactured but a very similar product is Spectraquartz. It is a very fine sand-like quartz material that is available in lots of colors. It is sold as a pool finish coating.
Locally, the only place that sells it is N.T. Ruddock, phone # 440/439-4976. They have a website describing the product & showing the colors/sizes available. It is only sold in 50lb. bags.
I actually mix black, brown, white, buff and blue together to vary the look between my tanks. I really like this product and have had good results growing Crypts, Hygrophila, Vals and some other rooted plants I can't remember.
Hope that helps. If you know you will be at the OCA meeting in November or at the OCA Extravaganza in Strongsville, I can bring you some samples to look at. Just let me know in advance.

hi deede,
This is melissa we meet last week at the cichlid meeting. hopefully you remember me. I had a question for you. What type of substrates are you using? Sand, Gravel, eco-complete? and which one works best for you?
