My travels took me past Baltimore today, so I stopped in at my old favorite, Exotic Aquatics. I wanted some fish that I knew they had, and their stock has always been healthy for me in the past and their prices good, so it was a no-brainer.
I asked the clerk what they do when they notice sick fish. He said that besides quarantining them they cull the weakest and sickest looking fish, dissect it and examine its gills and guts under a microscope, and then treat accordingly. I'm sure they don't go to that hassle for the obvious stuff like ich, but I feel good knowing that they go to such lengths to keep their fish healthy. Maybe this is standard practice at good fish shops, but it sure isn't at the chains. I've also found most of the staff at Exotic Aquatics to be smart and knowledgeable, which is really nice. Unfortunately their plants looked shabby, but you can't win 'em all. |

Where is Parkville located? All I have down in So. Md is Petco and Petsmart. There are a couple of mom and pop places but they are just as bad as the chains. We could use a really good pet store down here.

Parkville is on the top side of the Baltimore beltway, exit 30 north. Bit of a hike from southern Maryland, but if you're ever in the area, you'd probably want to check it out.
Interesting info about how they handle sick fish. I wonder how common a practice that is? |
