Actually, I'm pretty sure that guys outnumber gals on this site.

Why, and by what proportion, I've no idea- so I'm following these polls with quite a bit of curiousity.

Right now we're 4:1. I'm curious to see if that trend continues. It wouldn't surprise me...

It will be a landslide on the male side if people are honest. My name is Dana but I am a male btw. My wife loves the pretty plants and fish but she would never put the required effort into a "fish tank". Please forgive me I do not intend any offense but she is more interested in the bathroom colors matching and the current season of ANTM than wether or not the co2 is 10ppm or 35ppm.

IMHO, The OP started a thread that was almost certain to become sexist.

Much love though. We are who we are...

Maybe men don't want to buy books on aquatic plants, so they go online looking for answers for free, and stumble across the forums/ get hooked and spend all of their time/ life/ energy on them.
Women just buy the book.
Maybe? Best I could come up with.

I thumb through the books at the stores, but I prefer to keep up with up-to-date stuff here on the 'net. Plus it's free. And more fun, even though I do have a large stash of novels, I don't think I could drop 20-30$ on a fish/plant book unless it was something really great, or extremely knowledgable :].

But that's just me, I can't speak for all females on a whole, rofl.

I'm old-school and have actually have purchased about 10 aquarium books. "Dynamic Aquaria, Building Living Ecosystems" by Walter H. Adey and Karen Loveland is one of the best ever published. However, I also have a new-school side that just wants to find answers in seconds online. The "google" side of me???

A horrible TV show.

I think I'm going to agree that the more technical side of the hobby may keep some women out. My mother loves fish, but I could never imagine her setting up a canister filter or a CO2 system, It's just not her thing. Hence why I'm setting up her christmas present, a 5 gallon betta tank.

My ex-girlfriend once told me she "loved that her boyfriend has pretty hobbies." I always did kind of think of it as an extension of gardening, which stereotypically has always been associated with the ladies, but I never cared. I love gardening, and I love aquariums. It was a match made in heaven for me...

Ditto. I love gardening (shh. don't tell )I was talking to a friend last night and he said it's like the tank is the canvas, and the plants/ fish are like the paint. The hardscape gives it form.
But that's art related.
Still, gardening is normally considered something a woman would do as opposed to a man, but why are men more numerous on these forums?
One of the great mysteries of life.

It says more about the people than the question, Doesn't it.

To everybody:
Try to refrain from making vast generalizations please. And don't make claims on habits of all women especially when you're not one.

Personally, I don't see anything similar bettween traditional terrestrial gardening and planted tanks, other than they both involve plants, and sometimes dirt. Then again, I'm not big on terrestrial plants at all, so maybe it's just me.

Can I make claims on habits of some women if I am one?
