Thats what keeps me from switching to a Mac, none of the programs we use in the military will run on anything but Windows. Well that and the ridiculously high cost of Macs.

Somewhat on-topic, there's a great offer by Microsoft for students looking to purchase Windows 7 for $30: http://www.win741.com/

Note: It's the upgrade version and this is for download only, you need to pay a little extra ($15 I think) for the CD.

I recently built a new computer to replace the old one I built. I did a clean install of Windows 7, it went smoothly. I must say that I am enjoying the OS although there are some programs that I cannot use on Windows 7, but hopefully that will be resolved soon.

Clean install Windows 7 with Office 2007, adobe Acrobat 7, Roxio CD Creator and Bibblelabs (RAW Editor) took up about 17 GBs, about the same as my XP laptop. The Windows & OS ran noticeably faster which was a surprise because, the pre release version wasn't. I'm gonna wipe the hard drive again and install the x64 bit version since I have 4 GBs of RAM. x64 bit makes that extra .5 GB of RAM available. Install time was about the same time as XP, less than Vista. Now to see if I can take a working Ghost image.

I'm glad that your clean installs went well.

Gosh ... Some folks are having a hard time with it.

I clean installed 7 about 6 months ago and it was fine. It took about 30-40 minutes, and worked great! I had to uninstall it because i was spending too much time transferring all my settings on my computer between my XP, Ubuntu, and 7 installs, so i downgraded to XP and Ubuntu. Now i'm just waiting until the actual DVD comes out at Purdue so i can buy it for $40.

The notebook this morning had some issues opening pdf by web browser. Was running Acrobat 8 Pro and recieved error saying the current browser does not support opening .pdf please contact administrator. Installed Acrobat 9 Pro and problem fixed.

Upgrade my home PC to windows 7 Ultimate from Vista Ultimate and the upgrade took about 60 mins. But no issues at all. So it is really hit and miss on upgrading.

I did a (fairly) clean install on my home computer last night, and it was the easiest thing ever. Put in the DVD, specified the partition, and walked away while the files were extracted. When I came back, I specified the user name, and then it was done. Seemed like about 5 minutes work, with about half an hour duration. Much better than any other OS installs.

So far no big issues. Had one hard lockup, was probably doing too many things at once. It is faster than Vista, although a fresh install always feels faster than an old one. Like it...

I'll install one more time after wiping the partition first, to make it totally pristine. I tried a couple of antivirus programs before settling on MSE for now, and I don't want the remnants hanging around.

If you have a usb flash drive you can put windows 7 on there and install windows 7 from it. Doing it that way is very quick its the fastest I ever installed windows.. I have to get a ssd to try and see how fast it goes then..

Microsoft responded quickly and what shocked me, let to all those people who had this error keep their copy while refunding them their money. That's very unusual for microsoft to do such a thing, but I guess they did it to avoid any bad reviews on their new flag product.

What I think is a HUGE change is entering the key for windows. You entered before installation on Vista and now with W7 you enter it after you installed the OS or upgrade. So if you upgraded from Vista to Win7 and the key is not correct you are so SOL.

That's Microsoft's way of sticking it to the pirates and torrent downloaders. They just don't care anymore, even if it means taking down a few innocents as well.

Also, I want to echo what Wasserpest said on the last page: Usually people are setting themselves up for a fall when they try upgrading, rather than clean install. Just, word to the wise, that's all. That's why when you talk to IT guys and true computer geeks, all they do is backup data, from the personal folders, and export Outlook files, that sort of thing, then format the hard drive and start from scratch. Pretty much zero chance of fail, doing it this way.
