All you have to replace would be the fine filter floss thingy when it gets clogged (which for my 2213 is about every 2-3 mos.) You can was the rest of the media. The canister should still work at the same level as the tank, you just would have to prime it the way that I said, you couldn't do the "suck on the outtake until the water starts to flow down the intake filling the canister" method. My 2213 is top notch
EDIT: shouldn't have typed such a long post, I got ninja'd

Ok so...
1. Place it below the tank
2. Connect everything, fill it up, follow instructions, etc.
3. Fill it up with water
4. Plug it in
5. Clean weekly/monthly

That's right, right?

How do you disconnect everything? Can you leave the intake/outtake in the tank, or do you have to take it to the sink with you?

It's really self explanatory once you have it in your hands. If you can screw in a light bulb, you can use a canister filter.

I'd say you won't need to clean it even monthly, maybe every three

Lol ok, if it's really that easy

Would this be the same as the 2213? Or would the 2213 be a better choice?

And I hear mixed reviews of diffusing CO2 directly into the intake since it damages the impeller...is this advisable? Because with the 2213, the intake is on the bottom, and I assume that the impeller is at the top, so it should be diffused before it hits the impeller...right?

I'd go with the 2213 over the ecco. Waterfaller1 has the ecco and she has said that it isn't as good as a classic. As for the co2, it should work fine into the intake
EDIT: I ninja'd ya back EBB!

I would go with the classic over the Ecco. A classic filter will last you decades.

Yes, if you put the Co2 in the intake, most of it will dissolve before the impeller, and what does get chopped up by the impeller won't hurt it. You can also drill a small hole in the output hose just above the filter, and put your Co2 tube in there. This will provide a mist.

In case you didn't catch it earlier, yes the filter must be kept below the water line in the tank, these filters rely on gravity to help maintain the siphon.

Priming the filter is starting up the siphon.

A series of PM's through me and someone else on another forum. His responses are in quotes.

Are there any canister filters you'd recommend for my tank? For Christmas
Quote:
That is ridiculous. There aren't any canister filters small enough for a 10 gallon tank.
But the Eheim 2213 has only 116 GPH, and my AquaClear has 150 (< we should totally get that smiley)
Quote:
But a canister concentrates the flow through the tank much more than a HOB. And you're paying much more for much less. Stick with the HOB
Would you...agree?

EDIT: If that were the case, then should I just get this or this?

Oh, and in response to the above question, how do we detach it for cleaning? I hope the instructions will come with that

You'll get instructions man, calm down.

The 2213 is not too big for a 10 gallon, that person who said that has obviously never tried it! But guess who has? ME! And it's fine, I actually use a 2215 on my 10 gallon tank right now, and it works just fine. I have it going full blast, but stuff the inside full with filter floss, which helps tone down the flow a bit.

An Aquaclear filter is enough for a 10 gallon tank, if you don't have many plants growing in it, but plants block flow like nobody's business, and once it's a jungle in there, you'll appreciate the canister filter.

Is there an Eheim 2011 and 2211? Because I saw it in a thread recently, and they said its made for smaller tanks...

Z - for your sized tank the HOB is just fine. The reactor discussed here is inexpensive and I've heard really good things about it. Plus, going cheap allows you to ask for more/different things. Root tabs might help for your plants that get most of their "food" through the roots, but you're also using Flourite so I don't know if that's really your issue. Personally, I'd save the request for a canister filter for when you get a bigger tank.

If you want a diffuser - you don't really need the glass pipes - they're basically just to give a clean look to the tank so you don't have colored tubes and whatnot showing in the tank. From what I understand, they clog pretty easily with DIY CO2.

Just my two cents.

I really need a new heater so would like one of those titanium heaters. And I need at least one new filter. Two would be better so I can have one for back up.
Thats really all the fish stuff I am asking for or getting with the cash my dad and grandmother give me every year.
