selling a boat ???? - sold

I'm selling a boat (small co built bowrider with volvo) . There seem to be a lot of people that know nothing about boats and bota motors. I have disclosed the known issues, but how far does one need to go in explaining potential issues.

The boat is being sold out of the water. It runs on muffs, but that obviously is much different than under load. So far, few seem to understand that. I don't want to deal with the headache of it coming back for some unknown reason, but also don't want to scare everyone away.

I have priced it low as I suspect it needs some work, but believe others may solely think they are getting a 'deal'

what exactly is the question here?

I have sold a few boats over the last 20 yrs. I generally found that people knew what they were looking for and how much similar boats were worth/selling for. Do some research, and set the price. Don't let buyers bully you into lowering your price if you feel the boat is worth it.

The only think worse than used car salesmen are people looking to buy used boats.

Can you place your boat near a body of water? This might help you move it.

I've got lots of interest at my price, all seem clueless (entry level buyers). I may sell to a buyer tonight who offered to bring cash without even seeing the boat. I am trying to determine how much responsibility I have to educate them as not to deal with a mess on the back end of the transaction.

We're near the water (community boat ramp), but there are some parking issues with cars parked along the road in getting the trailer back in the drive as to why I'm also selling. So I'd rather not launch for a lookie loo. Otherwise, I'd have kept the boat myself.

It is no different than selling a car.

Thanks for the input.

Selling the car is next, after we buy a new one. Atleast that one is still worth what I paid (used Toyota). The boat was a hole in the water.

You can make up your own contract stating known conditions and that it's AS IS if that'll make you more comfortable. It may turn off some buyers though.

The ad listing already says "as is, no warranty implied". I think by state regs I need a bill of sale doc too, so will see if any language is allowed there.

I sell guns, and the bill of sale I give states, that X assumes ALL responsibility for the item, and that is was purchased as is, no warrentee implied or stated. Along with the date and amount paid.

Well, lots of people still looking at the boat. I'm selling cheap and most want me to launch it, let them have a free day on the water, and guarantee it, lol. I went ahead and listed it on ebay and have 1 more day left.

We bought a new Camry on Saturday and I sold my old Corolla yesterday within ~40 minutes on craigslist for what I bought it 2 years ago.

Selling a "necessity" is much easier than a "luxury".

They say there are 2 happy days with boat ownership. The day you buy.......... and the day you sell.

Good luck with day #2!

I might get another smaller one, so not all bad, but it will be mainly for me. The kids are too young and our parking issues with the neighbors made it more of a hassle than fun.

I sold the boat yesterday for more than I listed it- go figure.

If I see a smaller boat I might be back in trouble with the wife again.
