That would depend on the size and species of bass my freind. If you catch a 30lb striped bass I think you might change your view. When they hit a bait it is like being hit by a train.

Edit: One of my buddies and I hooked a 12 lb striper on a crappie minnow fishing at night. It took us about an hour and a half to get it up to the boat. One of the most incredible fights I have ever seen. He hooked it on 4lb test on an ultra light rod. When the fish moved its tail fin from side to side, the rod dipped from each direction of the wag. It might have even been a line record in GA for that sized striper vs. the lb test he caught it on. Probably about 4 times, the fish had stripped every bit of line off of the spool. The only thing keeping the line attached was my spool knot. Tackle has everything to do with the fight.

I once caught a largemouth bass that hit so hard it almost knocked me out of the boat. I never did set the hook on it. She did all of that on her own.

Hybrids / wipers (as fsh calles them) are fantastic fighters too. An 8 to 10 lb hybrid feels like a 12 to 15 lb fish when its on. They will hit a bait on the surface and immediately go straight down. They are notorious drag screamers. Them feeding reminds me of seeing those underwater videos of tuna ripping through a bait ball. Straight up and straight down.

I keep fish and shrimp. I try to treat these with much respect since they are a huge part of my diet. I eat fish and shrimp but no beef chicken pork ect...I dont like fishing like I did when young. Too many hooks thru the eyes and gills. So often hooking a fish is a death sentence.

One can use barbless hooks to remedy this problem. The hook slips right out rather than ripping anything to get it out. I have a line stripper/hook sharpener that has a small stone that can be used for this purpose. It works great.

man, bass fishing is fun, great fighter, maybe you should stop fishing for the baby, j/k heehee so there is specks up in canada too? is it like the specks from NY area, i think they call it weakfish or something, where its call the same name, but a bit different... or are we talking about way different kind of trout, the speckled trout down here is really a type of drum...

wait, brookies, as in brook trout? i don't think its good idea to keep a trout in ur aquarium, unless its a 10000gallon tank.... why not get some CPDs... they are like mini trouts...

True say, we dont have stripers, or wipers, or anything like that here, all we got bass wise are smallies and largemouth, which aren't even bass at all...and thats not even taking into account that around here they don't get much bigger than 6 or 7 pounds, and thats if you're lucky! pound for pound I find pike hit harder, and fight longer, they seem scrappier.

I would be interested in comparing a 30 or 40 pound striper vs. muskie attack!

Can you fish stripers top water? I find those the most exciting hits!

Well, here is where my naivette comes in...I have grown up thinking that brook and speckled and brown trout were one and the same...I know for a fact I fish for lakers, brook trout, and splake (hybrid b/n speckled and lakers, perhaps hence the confusion)

I assume from your post that there is in fact a difference?!

What are CPD's?

Ha! Well, not sure if you could compare a striper to a muskie. Muskies are vicious and pound for pound I am sure they fight better. You can fish stripers top water at certian times of the year, and it is quite a rush when one hits. There again, I think the tackle would be slightly different between the two types of fish. Rods I would use for stripers would probably be considerably lighter than what I would use for a muskie, but heavier than what I would use for a northern.

You are right about largemouth and smallies not being true bass. They are actually in the sunfish family.
