Does anyone use 150W HQI DE Metal Halide?

I am looking to replace my 10K bulbs with 8.8s...

1) Anyone know where to get them (other than singapore), and
2) If I have to buy from Singapore, anyone interested in getting a group deal?

Let me know.

- Jeff

I got a 70 watt bulb from this place and it only took 7 working days. Not that bad.

It was good a little lighter blue. I think if I had to do it again I would order the 6500K. But its still a good bulb for the price. I think it cost a total of like 32 or 33 including shipping.

you mean bluer than 10K? or Bluer than 6700 (expected) - I really think the HIDs for 6700 put out way too much yellow...

Did you notice any change in plant growth?

Thanks.

Sorry I meant that is was a more even white blue than the 10K. There is not much of a difference but if you did have two units one with a 10K and one with a 8K you would see only a small difference. I have not put the unit on the tank yet. I will be setting that tank up hopefully in the next week or so. I am slowly getting parts and I need a canister filter for it. If I was going to use either a 8K or 10K on fresh water I would use the 8K. The 10K seems to be a little to blue.

I tried to order one - their website keeps asking me to pickup.

Did you call them? Use Paypal or CC?

Thanks.

Are you asking me about the site that I ordered the bulb from? If so I sent them an email and asked the about shipping to the US and he gave me a total and a paypal address. This was awhile ago.

Thanks for the tip - I got three of them and put one of them in yesterday. My 10Ks that I am replacing are from e-bay and about 9 months old, and both my wife and I noticed that the 8K bulb was quite noticeably brighter. I'm not sure if it's cause its a newer bulb, or better bulb. 9 months at 8 hours a day seems like the 10Ks shouldn't have decreased in intensity at that age/usage.

Under the new lamp, I also noticed my R. Wallichi seemed (how's that for scientific) to almost instantly "double" its pearling. I also like how it pulls out more reds. There is an appeasing "pop" my telenthera is putting out (visually) that I hadn't noticed before. Which is weird, because from 3-feet away, I can't really tell any "color" difference in the light itself. Looks pure-white to me.

Tonight I'll put another one on the LHS of the tank over the Macrandra and see what happens.

I sent the guy at fishedit an e-mail to see if he had any spectral plots to see exactly what we have here, but so far, I LIKE IT!

Thanks!

- Jeff

I have no idea about PAR values, but side by side with other brands in the same type of fixture they seem just as bright.

I've been using a fishneedit 8K continuously now for about 7 months and its still doing fine.
I'm sure intensity will creep down but I havent noticed it, plants havent either. color temp is still consistent with the startup.
my 150W HQIs are over relatively shallow tanks (17")

I think the coralife 10K HQI bulbs have a nice crisp whiteness to them.
I prefer them over the fishneedit 10K but not by much.
all the the 8K and 6700K bulbs I've tried skew the colors too unnaturally for me.
8K = too green, but better looking than 6700K
6700K = too yellow
10K = nice crisp white.

I tried a month each on 8K / 6700K / 10K -- and did not notice a difference in growth.
even trying fancy brand bulbs vs cheapies. I didnt see growth differences.
A month is long enough test for me, since its the average length of a grow cycle.
so the test strategy was - change bulb, replant, wait a month, repeat.
I say it boils down to aesthetics, what temp looks best for your eyes and the plant selection.

Par is relative however, as is CT. I want a spectrum analyzer! Hmmmmm - next major purchase?

I had 15K (or was it 12?) over my PT when I first set it up (extra from my reef-tank) and although the plants grew OK, I couldn't stand the color. Like on a reef tank - don't like it on a planted tank. Note - the growth here was under the 12Ks (pretty sure it was 12), then I switched to 10K.

Here's 10K vs. 12k - guess which is which (these were taken within 1/2 hour of each other...):

update - just replaced the LHS bulb with the 8K. I LIKE IT! And the plants on that side are pearling more than they were yesterday...
