Quick Lighting Question

I have a 110g tank w/canopy 60x18x24, I had installed 6 t5 54w HO's in my canopy with a 1/4 inch plywood underneath with stand offs and water prof end caps.
Would it be all right to run the lights without the glass cover on the tank , i don't have anything that will splash the water up and there is a big glass center brace in the tank.
Would that be better to grow plants that way??
