Q: Shorter power compact bulbs?

Just wondering if there's such a thing as shorter power compact bulbs? ie 65w power compact bulb is 22", can I find a shorter bulb to fit a 10g canopy? Or should I just use a lower watt power compact bulb since its shorter and will fit? Would it be safe to put a lower watt power compact bulb onto a 65w ballast? Sorry for the silly questions

No, you will need to use a lower wattage. And you must match bulbs and ballasts.

You can use 36w straight pins bulbs from Coralife in 6700K and 10,000K. AHSupply carries 5500K, 6700K and 10,000K bulbs. They are ~ 16½" to 16¾" long.

The both of the AHSupply 1x36w and 1x55w kits use a Fulham Work Horse 3 ballast which rated for 64w.

You can get some 40w square pin 8000K bulbs from ADA. Current USA has a 40w square pin dual daylight 6700K/10,000K bulb. These bulbs are ~ 16½" to 16¾" long also.

Thanks for the info Left C. And I was just about to make a new canopy this weekend, but after I read your comment I'm relieved. Thanks for you help!

Oh forgot to mention that I have a 65w bulb that is brand new. Its 6700k, just wondering if anyone wants to take it off my hands now that I can get a shorter bulb to work thanks to Left C. Much appreciated!

oh one more question Left C. If I was to use a 36w bulb on 65w ballast, would that push the 36w to 65? If so I'll get some fans installed into the canopy.

I know that the Work House 3 ballast is rated for 64w and it is load sensitive. This means that your 36w bulb will run at 36w, I think.

It has 2 red wires coming out of the ballast. You can use only one red wire and tie of the other off or use both red wires sliced together.

I'm, not an electrician and this is all that I know about that ballast.

Someone else will need to help you with more information about the Work Horse 3 ballast.

Here are the diagrams: http://fulham.com/Find_Process.php

The ballast I'm using is from Coralife. The model is SPL-165R-Js. There aren't any red wires that you were talking about.

Can you go to the web to find more info about wiring your ballast to the bulb socket?

I'm not an electrician. Maybe someone will be able to help you.

You are very welcome.

Do you just have to plug in a bulb to use your Coralife ballast?

The Coralife ballast should have a wattage rating printed on it.

You may want to read some of these Google articles about your ballast and/or contact Oceanic.
