best 10g tank lighting
what is the best lighting for my 10g tank? i just got hydrophelia pulsmersa and anacharis (sorry about spelling) and i dont think 2 15 watt incandescents ( which is what i have) will really let them grow. is there any flourescent 25 watt bulb ( no more than 25 watts) thats will fit in a 10g tank fixture like the regular tubular ones i have? i tried a 26 watt my friend suggested and a few hours after i put it in it started to melt the plastic. thanks for the help.

taking an old black plastic 10gal incandescent tank hood and throwing the best compact floursent bulb in it, is not going to give you the "best 10g tank lighting". your friends bulb probably melted your plastic because it was a spiral bulb. you need to find a linear shape bulb 5000-6700k, but even then it's a waste of light since without a decent reflector you are losing over half the light into your hood. please take a moment to search recent threads as we've discussed this issue at least dozen times just in the past few weeks.

i see your point. your right. i swapped the fixture with my other tank that has a 40 watt flourescent strip and i think that'll work well.

I have pretty good success with the AHSupply 2x 13W Deluxe Bright kit. Thanks to the outstanding reflectors, a lot of light finds its way into the tank.
They used to sell a 17" reflector that housed both bulbs very nicely head-to-head, but I can't see it on their side anymore. For higher light levels (along with more need for active cooling of your fixture) you can go to the 36W kit. That would require a good fertilizing/CO2 regime for your tank. |
