[quote=GraFFix]asked him about cherry shrimp and he said he would order some for me. So the next week i went on delivery day to pick up some shrimp...well I was a little dissapointed when they were all sold already...untill i saw the price on the tank they were in. $12.99 each OUCH!QUOTE]

Old orchard aquarium has cherries for $8 and I thought that was rediculous. Old orchard aquarium is generally very expensive. They do have an awsome deal on PC 36w 6500k straight pin's. They are $15, I was so suprised to see the most expensive store carry an amazing price on these lights

Deep Reef is a great shop! I've been buying SW livestock from them since their Pet Paradise days and being new to the planted side of the hobby, I'm quite impressed with their FW and plant selection after my last visit a few weeks ago. Plus, they have some pretty cool frogs there.

Going to have to check out Deep Reef. Aquarium Adventure's a bit far for me to go for plants, living close to Lemont. Scott's Petshop is my secondary, but they never really have new plants and they NEVER answer their phones. They do respond very quickly to faxes, so I often fax my questions to them.

Went to Deep Reef. I wasn't impressed. Planted tank in front was dirty and had green water. Not a big selection in plants either.

As far as the south and west suburbs, I still think Scott's Pets and Aquarium Adventure have clean, dedicated planted tanks.

Aquarium Adventure, Hoffman Estates has a large selection of plants. I bought one several weeks ago and it was very healthy. They seems to have a nice selection also.

Actually, I think Aquarium Adventure and Scott's have about the same amount of variety of plants, it's just AA, stocks more of each specific plants.

One thing to note about Deep Reef, which I forgot to mention. When I was there looking at there fish, they just received shipment of some new fish, so they were floating the bags in several tanks. I happened to be looking around and noticed several fish in one tank had ich and one had some kind of fungus. The sad thing was, they still released the new fish that happened to be floating in that tank.

I mentioned about the ich to the employees and they said they were currently treating the tank and they were aware of it. Hmmm. I saw no discoloration from the water due to meds nor was the temp higher than normal on other tanks. YET, they still released new fish into that tank. sad.

RobChuck - so don't quote it and copy it over, dude! How do we get that Bonsai guy erased from this thread, if not the board?

Deep Reef- good for saltwater fish, but freshwater tanks were full of ich when I went there. And they throw similar species of female fish in the same tanks, so it is impossible to be sure you are getting a clean pair of the same fish species. For example, Peacock cichlids, the females all look the same, but that doesn't mean you should put them in the same tank and sell them as part of pairs if you dont' know for sure which breed of peacock it is!

King Coral used to be good, I agree it is dirty and a mess. And now it is closing.

I did not see Glen Ellyn Pet shop listed yet, they have a larger-than-usual selection of African cichlids, but pretty slim on the plants. I good selection of equipment, though. Same is true of TropiQuatics in Lombard, they have a good selection of saltwater, and Africans, and community fish like tetras and such, the plants are a hit-and-miss depending on when you go.

Scott's is probably the best around for plants, but I swear those guys give me bogus information on fish many times. Sometimes I test them with questions I know to see if they are trying to sell me anything or actually give me good advice. So can I trust them on plants?

Sorry...I knew what I wrote was overflowing with irony. It just bothered me that I linked here through the subscription email only to find the spam.

But I did get a chance to visit Aquarium Adventure yesterday, and agree with Crazy Eddie's comparison of AA with Scott's: about the same variety of plants, but AA just had tons more quantity crammed in their tanks. I was very impressed with the vastness of AA's FW fish selection however. Their show tanks all looked great, but their SW selection was terrible IMO.

I'm not quite sure of their new address, but the store is on the east side of Main Street, just south of the Dairy Queen, in an old hardware store building.
