When did you get your first tank?
When did you get your first tank?
I got my first tank as a birthday gift from my parents when i was 7 years old. It was a 12 gallon eclipse bowfront setup with a biowheel filter and light built-in to the canopy. I had several angels and even a few goldfish at one time (yes, i know, severely overstocked!) in that tank.
(Sorry, no picture)
A few years later, i abandoned the 12G and purchased two 29G's. I had a bunch of rocks and i purchased a few "aquatic" (but really terrestrial) plants from Petsmart that came in those little plastic tubes.
(Sorry, can't find a picture of the second 29G)
When i was 13, i convinced my parents into letting me purchase a 68G tank from someone on craigslist. This is where the real fun began. I stopped buying plants from Petsmart, found TPT via a google search, and started absorbing as much information about planted tanks as possible. After many struggles, a lot of frustration, but a lot of fun along the way, i came up with this:
When i was 15, I made the big leap from a 68G to a 150G. Let's just say, the leap was far too large... i had it up and running for less than a year before i took it down. I simply couldn't afford to maintain it, or even set it up the way that i had wanted.
At age 16 (now), i purchased a brand new, shiny 90G tank and stand. This is my current active project.
wow nice tanks! WHen I was little my family had a 10 gallon tank with just a bunch of fish.... Then when I was 7 I got a 29 gallon kit for christmas. I got an oscar too... that tank also held at different times guppies then an amazon biotope for a school project. It was planted put only had an 18 watt T-8 bulb. so yeah didn't turn out well. Curently I have a 46 gallon bf reef that im putting into a 10 gallon and I just setup a 55 gallon that Im going to breed angel fish in.
When I was little, I had a little goldfish I won from a fair in one of those flat sided goldfish bowls. Lasted a week. My second year of highschool, my mom got me a red Betta for x-mas(you can see him in my Betta photo album). He lived in a round goldfish bowl for a year and a half then died from eating too much of a shrimp pellet when I tried to put him with some ADFs in a 10 gallon tank I used to use for hamsters, my mom randomly got the frogs from a co-worker one day. I got another Betta and a 5 gallon tank for my dorm when I went to college. Tried to get some frogs after the ones I had died, the new ones didn't last long. After Betta#2 died, I got a third Betta. During my spring break several weeks ago, I got 2 panda corys. So right now: I have a 5 gallon with 2 corys and a 1 gallon fish bowl with a betta.(until I can go buy some bushy plants, then the Betta's moving in with the corys)
my first tank
two real plants i think? I'm not sure and I do not remember:P
I was 7(?) years old when my dad and I picked up a 10g. I'm not sure if we ever did WC's.... Then that sat in the basement for a few years after all the fish died of "Walmart disease".
But I started up again in all earnestness after I won two goldfish from a fair in May '09. I had them in a vase until they suffocated a fortnight later. I felt extremely guilty. A month later, Granny died, and I remembered how peaceful it was watching fish, and concluded fish were good for me mentally. So I promised two feeders a good home to the best of my abilities, and broke the 10g out of the basement for a growout tank, and then my LFS buddy convinced me to get a java fern, Crypt wendtii, and a sword
Then purchased a used 55g, that 10g is a QT, filled with Lilaeopsis brasilensis, waiting for White Clouds and a shubunkin.
I was 7 or 8 as well. I started out with a 10G. My dad decided to get it as he had always liked fish and thought they were peaceful. My dad built a nice angle iron stand that to this day is as strong and rust proof as the day he finished it.
I was 11 when I got my 30G bowfront as a b-day present. My 'little plec' wasn't so little anymore and I wanted to try bigger fish. I had then gotten interested in Ghost Catfish and Black fin tetras. Not the most colorful but still interesting. My 2 ghost cats lived 7 years (had them since I started) and are buried in the back yard with my old dog duke.. still miss him, great dog!
Then I decided to try plants in the 30G bowfront.. They all died. Couldn't figure out why.
3 years later
I want to try it again... Dec. 2009 I get a 20G high for 'christmas' and begin my planted adventure.
Now, I have almost 700$ put into a tank that I may only see 250$ back out of. But I love every minute of it. Even with the frustrations.
I started when i was 10 and my dad had a 10 gallon and he was going to flush a molly because it was harassing other tank mates. I took a 1 gallon jar with an airpump and cleaned 1/3 of it every week and it lived for a year. At age 13 i got a 29 gallon for Christmas and by the time i found planted tank at age 14, i upgraded to a 37 planted and a 55 cichlid tank and not to a 90 gallon cichlid tank. I wish i could make the 90 planted but parents aren't found of me running a high tech tank.
I started mine when i was 10. I use amazon swords and a few moss to house my goldies. Later on, i become interested and try more plants. Now i have a heavily planted 20 gallon tank! Yay. I have grown them in river sand, no ferts and no co2.
I started when i was 10, i planted one watersprite and 2 amazon swords in my first aquarium. They live quite a long time. When I was 11 i experimented some moss and moneywort. And they do thrive. Then i added some ludwigia and crystalwort. I started dosing ferts. And then I replanted the plants into a new 20 gallon tank. Currently I have moneywort, ludwigia, amazon sword, crystalwort, java moss, vallisenaria, crypt wendtii, and soon some ludwigia sedoides. Fishes are 2 black moors, 5 tetras, 2 shinbunkins and 4 platys. I use river sand as substrate.
