Setting up my CO2 system
I received my CO2 setup from Rex Grigg this week, so I will be setting it up this weekend. This is the type of thing that I like to do uninterrupted at my own pace. Wouldn't you just know that since I want to do that, I have all kinds of things to do this weekend.
Ok, rant off.... I have a 5lb cannister, and I bought everything else from Rex. I have to say, from just reading and now looking over the equipment, I am very pleased. The quality is top notch. I have his regulator, a Fabco needle valve, a bubble counter, and a CO2 reactor, along with the accessories needed to put it all together. I will try to get back here as I get it set up and see how difficult it was. Joe Last edited by Buck; 03-16-2008 at 03:11 PM. |

If you need any help, feel free to PM me.
Everything should be streight forward for you. The hardest thing would probably be determining your bubble rate. It's best to start low and work your way up. Here is a good calculator to help determine your CO2 in parts per million (ppm): http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_plant_co2chart.htm I would check the parameters about 1/2 way through your photoperiod and then at the end of your photo period. Then just adjust the bubble rate the next day. After 2 to 4 days, you should have a handle on everything.

So just to update that I have not set up my system due to DIY stupidity.
I purchased a CO2 reactor from Rex Grigg and instead of getting some teflon tape to seal the barbed fittings to it, I used a PVC to ABS glue on the connections. The glue was very strong, and after using it, getting concerned about the glue, I researched and the company says that particular glue is not for potable water. This makes me very hesitant to use it now. Time to build my own reactor and do it the right way. I am sure I can get the PVC parts, but the 5/8" barb fittings may be harder to find. Anyone know where to pick a couple up locally? |

JW -
I had to use 5/8" barbs because I am using a Rena XP2 filter. I was able to find 90 degree barbs at Ace Hardware. I know there is one in Woodstock, but if you have problems finding them there you can find them at the store on Highway 92 between Bells Ferry Rd. and Wade Green Rd. I believe that they are white/translucent in color. Ace is the place to find a lot of stuff that you can't find at Lowes or Home Depot. As far as the cement goes, did you use PVC cement? I used the clear stuff that you can buy from Lowes. I also used the clear cleaner which is basically acetone to clean the ends and coupler fittings before using the cement. Just let it dry before joining with the PVC cement and then let cure for 24 to 36 hours. If you did use the PVC cement, you should be ok. Just need to let it cure.
