C02 in a Plant Only Tank...?

I've pretty much always dealt with C02 in a planted tank with other livestock (fish, shrimp, etc). I am setting up a high-light tub with pressurized C02 and the misting method to try to grow some UG.

So, basically, I want the C02 ppm on the High-side. Does it matter how high the C02 is? 30ppm? 50ppm?...???

In other words, in a plant-only tank--is there such a thing as too much C02?

Thanx!

No actual experience, but I seem to recall Tom and others claim that excess CO2 has limited, if any, extra value. I don't recall reading anything about getting to grossly excessive levels causing problems, but I sense there is just a diminishing returns on the benefits.

My thoughts,
Brian.

Hi Brian,

Thank You. Now that you mentioned it--that does sound familiar. I just couldn't recall the specifics (still can't actually). But common sense does point toward diminishing returns, both for the plants and for out-gassing.

My only real issue is measuring the C02 level. I have a DC, but the suction cup is shot, so I either have to come up with a new one or jury-rig the thing. I can move one of my pH controllers over to this setup, but then the probes need calibration and, and, and,....sheesh. Yeah, I'm lazy, but I've also been busy with other stuff..... Still need to do all the math and get my peristaltic pumps setup.......

I'll see what I can come up with. I'd really like to grow some of this stuff.....

Ok, I've got it. Done the math. Checked it. Re-checked it. Double-Triple checked it. And then checked it again. I think its right. We'll see..... Pumps are setup ready to go....

Found a suction cup, so the DC is now functional.

Got out the calibration solutions and did both probes. Moved one controller over to the UG setup.

Only thing left is to check my starting pH when I get up at 3am for work. Things should be degassed enough by then to give a decent starting pH.

Looking at ~8wpg. Think that'll be enough? Or should I double it?

Still interested in a refresher on the original question......

you can always try growing the UG emersed....then you don't have to worry about CO2 or algae

I thought about that, but that might just take some of the fun out of it!

Bigger question for me is: How well does it transfer to submersed.....?

Generally, most plants tend to make the transition well, as they are healthy and well rooted after growing emersed

Just got done reading through this thread:

New method(?) to start up an algae free tank without any water changes or work

Looks like I'm going to take a bit of it and try it emersed that way....
