Getting started!

Well thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I am jumping headlong into a tank project. The tank i am going to be working with is a 35 gallon Tall (Dimensions coming). I need to do a little cleanup as it was free, and looks to be in solid shape. I am not gonna post my regular tank as i am embarrased in comparison y'alls tanks, but it is a 45 gallon bowfront, not sure of the lighting (working on that), Residents are 1 comet, 2 Danio, 1 Loach, and 2 small (2") Taisho Sanke koi. Plants are Hornwort, and an unidentified Green braodleaf. I do have some wood in the tank (3 small pieces). The tank bottom is a mixture of gravel and sand. I have two Topfin 40 gallon filters running all the time. No heater the tanks is generally 65 or so degrees. Coming soon is my Co2 Diffuser, i am going to be using the DIY yeast reactor method. I welcome recommendations!

more to come.....

Here's my recommendation. Post your 45g bowfront! Everyone starts from zero, it's just that some of us have been here longer than others.

Besides, people like pics.

Swylie, thanks for the boost in confidence, I will post pics then. I just feel a little noobish.

By the way, does anyone use the following chart to determine the CO2 content in their tanks?

Thanks

Ben

Don't worry about that. Feel noobish now, but a year from now when you're posting tips and your experiences on here you can look back and remember where you started. That would make an interesting thread, no? Noob pics? A picture of the tank that started this all consuming(including money) addiction that is the planted tank, and then right next to it a picture of your best tank. I think I'll start that thread now. Don't feel bad though. We all started there. And we all like pictures, so get 'em posted!

Mixing goldfish and tropicals is a big no no. Also goldfish are big plant eaters. Something to consider.

What do you want from the tank? Is it a fish tank that happens to have plants or a planted tank that happens to have fish?

Decide what you want and we can better guide you.

Default Thank you!

Well, the tank profile that I have created is really just my fishtank, I am planning on a planted tank, in the 35 gallon range. I am in the process of cleaning it up. I willp ost some pics of that progression soon.

Thanks for the info

Default thanks Overfloater!

I just wanted to say thank you, I was immediatly able to find several reasons as to why the Goldfish and tropicals are not compatible. I am planning to remedy this asap. Again thank you. Man I am a nub

For those who may not know why, I quickly was able to find several pages all saying several similar things to these statements.

"Most Tropical Fish prefer to live in water with a temperature between 75 and 80 degrees F."

"Goldfish do best in water that is about 65 degrees F"

"Tropical Fish and Goldfish eat different foods, and Goldfish can not properly digest Tropical Fish Food."

Interestingly though, that tank has been stable for several years now
The ammonia i am not worried about, because the tank (45g) has two, 40 gallon power filters running with activated carbon.
