Need fish idea's for my planted tank

Well... I am so sick of guppies I am pulling them all out of my 22 Gallon tank. That being said, I now have some room for some additional fish.

This tank is a 22 Gallon tall (24 x 12 x 18) and will have 3 platies, 2 Cories, some shrimp and snails. I need something else in there that will occupy the middle to top layers of the tank.

Here's the catch, they must be from central or south america. Trying to keep a pseudo biotope here so I want to stay within my own restrictions.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

My personal favorite is the Rummy Nose tetra. They're great schoolers and always active at mid-level. Naturally Cardinals and Lemon Tetras are good second choices. Since I don't know your water parameters, can't say how happy they would be since they'll be wild fish from very soft water.

The water is fairly soft... I keep it around 6.5 in this tank.

How about dwarf cichlids? Perfect for planted tanks, IMO. Other options include honey, dwarf, or sparkling gouramis; dwarf, golden, or Espe's pencilfish; marbled hatchets; Espe's, emerald eye, or harlequin rasboras; a host of small tetras including neons, cardinals, gold, red or black phantoms, black neons; clown or cherry barbs; a male betta or multiple females; the list goes on and on...

Is there anything in particular that interests you?

I've kept just about every fish listed on this page - for what you're looking for, my favorites are Rasbora Tetras and Hatchets. They'll occupy the mid to upper regions of the tank and offer some interesting colors and shapes to your tank.

I replied earlier to your post and had completely forgotten about Rams until I noticed the reply above about dwarf cichlids. I've a trio of Rams in my 120 biotope and I think they'd be an ideal addition to your 22.

Well I decided to go with a pair of marbled angelfish. They have made themselves some lovely territorries and have been eating baby snails since I put them in. They are getting along with the platies, oto, cory, and siamese algae eater so far.

I am still curious about Blue Rams. I think they look gorgeous, and I have a 32 gallon they could go in. I'm just trying to find out more about them.
