Algae Grower
|
After a several weeks of struggling to get my lighting/CO2/ferts right, I am now starting to see some real progress. I am still battling with BBA, but the plants are growing visibly from day to day.
I have noticed that one of my Jungle Val plants is propagating. It has two smaller plants growing about a half-inch from the main base. Should I seperate these daughter plants from the main plant, or leave them where they are. Also, my red melon sword is really starting to show some progress. It has grown two nice big brand new leaves in the last week alone. I have noticed that some of the older, smaller leaves are now not getting much light and are withering. Should these leaves be removed? How does Melon Sword propagate? Could I simply plant a trimmed leaf in a different spot? |

I would leave the daughter plants attached until they've got at least 3-4 leaves that are several inches tall. And you can leave them attached permanently with no harm. Detaching them will trigger them to send out additional runners, which will make more plants. If that's what you want, then just snip the runner!
As for the sword, any dying or withering leaves should be removed. They require more energy for cell repair than they are worth. Just don't butcher the plant down to nothing! I generally remove only one withered leaf a day. You can't just plant a trimmed sword leaf, though. They need the base to grow.

Yeah, I got a sword thats giving me 5-6 daughter plants every couple of weeks. I think I'm gonna get a 55gal just for propagating plants and clippings for myself and trade and sale to the LFS. :P
