What's with this Jungle Val?

OK, I ordered 5 jungle val on ebay and they came in about 2 monhts ago. I put them into my 55 tank (with 2.75 watts/gallon) and they started to grow. Then they stopped, and before I knew it I only had 2 left!!! I knew that 5 wasn't going to be enough, and that Jungle Val reproduces readily. So, now I have 2 jungle val, one is dieing, but another has produced 2 runners ( or really, it produced a new plant, and then the new plant made another one). The thing is though, the leaves curl, and don't grow straight up... What can I do to get more of a val like look out of these jungle vals?!

Slow growth will cause more curling in those leaves. The faster they grow, the straighter they grow. So you're not seeing as fast of a growth as you'd like to see? Five basics - Light-CO2-N-P-K.

2.75wpg is enough light. What are your N03 levels? Vals are fairly strong root feeders so a Jobe's stick near the largest plant's base would help ensure adequate N-P-K supplementation.

That leaves CO2. I'm using DIY CO2 generators and it's pretty frustrating trying to keep CO2 levels up. When they do fall, I see the same thing you're seeing - slow growth, small leaves, some die-off.

OK, that helps... I finished adding my flourite, and after removing the pots (they took up a lot of space) I realized how few plants I have!!! Time to get more plants!! I need to get some Jobes Fertalizer spikes (where can I get them??) and put them in with my flourite. My val has been producing some runners, I think I have 3 or 4 now... I want to wait until they are of decent size to cut them off and plant them seperatley. Also, I just recently hooked up my CO2 reactor, and it is working!! I did the water pump witha gravel vac with foam in the end, and it seems to be doing a good job. Thanks for the reply!!!

I got my Jobe's sticks at Wal Mart. You can get them at K Mart, Home Depot or any garden center.

Sometimes a plant will concentrate on sending runners and establishing roots before growing their leaves significantly. Once thos vals root themselves, you should see more leaf growth.
