Calling all fancy guppy breeders!!!
Greetings, I 'm getting into breeding fancy guppies and was wondering if there's anyone out there that knows their guppy genetics real well from experience.
For example, ---if a half-black blue male guppy breeds with a sunfire yellow female guppy, what do the fry look like? ----If a female is exposed to two males with just them in the tank, would the female drop fry that are a mix of both males or is it the first male that "hits" her that fathers all the fry.. I have so many more questions that websurfing could not satisfy, and this forum has always helped me greatly, so i wanted to give it a shot. Thank you all for your time.

My fancy guppy just had a batch of 30 last week. They are all in a 5-1/2 gallon tank until I fiqure out where to go from here. Unfortunally I bought another tank at a tag sale this weekend. A 45 gallon tall for $15.00. I need to see a shrink or go to a fish tank anonomous meeting.I walked away from it twice but my baby guppys started to talk to me in my head and forced me to by it. It looks to me like some are darker and smaller than the others and I am guessing these are males but only time will tell. There is something really nice about a tankfull of fancy guppys.Maybe Guppys in the 20 long, My Angels in new 45. My Rainbows in the planted 30 gallon and who knows what for the 10 and 5 gallon spares.

It really depends on the heritage (phenotype) of both fish to be able to see what is displayed (genotype). I can't tell you what they will look like since it's up for toss. By the way, I hope that you got that female from someone that kept their lines clean and the separate color varations in separate tanks (in other words, a female that was kept with other females, away from the company of ANY males). Otherwise, there's really no telling which male fathered the young, since the female can store sperm for successive batches.
Best bet is to let them go at it, then catalogue what the fry looks like and keep on doing that for successive generations (their maturity rates are quick enough to be able to do this). The first male that knocks the female up, isn't exactly the sole father. Successive males that deposit will also have a chance of fertilizing the developing eggs. Just make sure that she's clean to begin with (never been bred before, otherwise, you might as well start with another female). As for why bigpow has been getting all females, it is dependent on the variety. Certain varieties will only produce male/female (or in higher %) if bred to another variety. You might want to take the females and breed them back to the father and see what you get. |
