Female rams?
I have what I _think_ are a pair of female rams who are currently fiercely guarding a clutch of opaque (and thus I'm assuming infertile?) eggs against two sparkling gouramis. Has anyone experienced this before? Both the rams have the characterstics ascribed to female Rams (shorter dorsal spines, pink blush, etc.) but one _could_ be a male.

Its possible that one is a male...apparently there is a lot of hormone injecting that goes on in the ram trade to get the colors more vibrant...so they guy at my LFS says. Wait to see if they actually hatch...

I'm pretty sure the eggs are infertile. All of them are opaque white. The couple have very good parental instincts, fanning the eggs, mouthing them, taking turns defending them. It's quite a sight. They both look like females though!!! I will leave the eggs in there for the next couple of days.

I saw two female angel do the same, they would lay eggs on the outtake of the filter and watch them, but they were always infertile. You really should add a male thought...

You can take a look at an old thread of mine. The photos may help you to determine sex. Females tend to have more blue 'sparklies' on/near the the black patch on their sides. The eggs are most likely opaque because your water conditions are not right, not because of lack of fertilization.... That said, I have had many cichlids spawn without mates. But when they did, they did not tolerate the presense of any other fish (male or female), so this is why I doubt you have a pair of females sharing the work.
